The Washington Football Team Is A Deshaun Watson Away From A Super Bowl

PFT - Rumors already are circulating, and we’ve already heard them from multiple different people, that Watson has quietly broached with teammates the possibility of requesting a trade. If that’s happening, it may just be a strategic effort to ensure his views are respected by ownership. Regardless, it raises the stakes and crosses a bridge and potentially sets the foundation for Watson eventually to decide that he’d like to continue his career elsewhere.

We can already hear the reaction. “He just signed a new contract, the cap charge would be crippling!”

Take a look at the contract. Trading him would result in a cap charge of $21.6 million. The Herschel-sized haul of draft picks that a Deshaun Watson trade would generate would more than justify it.

We have not a clue who will be the starting QB of the Washington football team, the Washington Football Team, next season. Right now it's a 3-headed race between Kyle Allen, a rookie we draft, or a veteran we trade for. The most commonly tossed around vet is Matt Stafford, who I think would be fine, but obviously isn't the sexiest of veterans that you'd want to give a huge haul and a lot of money to.

Deshaun Watson though? Boy. If he somehow, someway does become available, I'd be veryyyy interested in him. 

Here's where I get conflicted- I've seen Washington (Dan Snyder) trade a myriad of draft picks for very little in return more times than I can remember. If there was a player on the market, Dan Snyder was giving a 3rd round pick for him. Deshaun would probably require multiple 1sts and mid-rounders, at the very least. His price would be steeper than a waistband boner...but would it be worth it?

Deshaun is still only 25 which suggests he's yet to hit his peak. Washington has a defense that ranked all year in the top 5, finishing as the number 2 ranked defense in the league. But the QB position has been SO BAD, Alex Smith can barely walk, and our current backup was an XFL backup. Kyle Allen will be healthy next season, but his play didn't exude confidence that he can be THE guy to lead a team to the playoffs and more. Deshaun Watson takes care of everything.

So the question is- are we an elite QB away from a Super Bowl? I think you could make a strong argument of "yes". Defense wins championships, and we have that. We have the best Dline in football, the best rookie safety in football in Kam Curl, the Oline came out of nowhere and impressed, a sensational 1-2 punch in Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson, an up-and-coming TE in Logan Thomas, and not to mention the best punter in the league, Tress Bae. Get me another reliable WR, some Oline depth, and a linebacker, and this team is built to win right now. 

It's not the craziest thought to give a haul for Deshaun. I don't know what the Texans would demand, but it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility that if they actually were to trade him, Washington could be a strong suitor. Ya never know.
