Christmas Just Came And So Did I: Mets Sign Dellin Betances
LFG MOTHERFUCKING M. I had fully convinced myself that the Mets were going to head into next season hoping that the bullpen went from flaming pile of shit to at least not a full fledges disaster just because bullpens sometimes do that due to regression to the mean or whatever fancy sabermetric term you want to use. But signing Dellin Betances at least helps the chances of that happening immensely and also gives the Mets yet another local product that the Wilpons probably see as a way to draw people to Citi Field. Shout out to that non-horse on Yo Cespedes' ranch that gave the Mets a whole bunch of money to spend on Betances or to Uncle Stevie Cohen for giving us an early Christmas gift.
This isn't all sunshine and rainbows though. The Mets still need Edwin Diaz to be any Edwin Diaz but 2019 Edwin Diaz. Betances can apparently be a rich man's Familia in that he can inexplicably lose it and he wasn't exactly the model of good health while on a team that doesn't have the worst track record for injuries in baseball with (for now) a meddling owner. But Straight Cash Steve Cohen should be getting rid of the pesky Wilpon problem that will hopefully alleviate all these "curses" and "bad luck injuries" that only seem to happen to the Mets.
Betances has never thrived as a closer, but the Mets don't need him to be one considering they have two guys in Diaz and Seth Lugo that have proven they can close games out. More importantly, Betances bumps all the other bullpen arms down a level (namely Jeurys Familia thank fucking God) with absolutely FILTHY stuff when he is on and there is a chance that Lugo's arm won't come flying off his body because he has to come in during the first sign of trouble or close every game if 2019 Diaz returns. Add Betances to a pen with those guys that can be good if their right along with Winter Soldier Robert Gsellman, The Brach, Justin Wilson, Michael Wacha, and whatever young arms may be coming up and we may have ourselves an actual bullpen this season. And even if Betances has issues bouncing back from his Achilles injury, gets banged up throughout the season, or has trouble recreating his 15+ K/9(!!!) from his last few healthy seasons, at least Hubbs is really pissed off.
Now lets sit back and enjoy some high stinky cheddar that may or may not have been given to us from Santa Cohen.
