All 30 Major League Teams Will Wear Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Hats Before Their Games This Weekend

The day of the Parkland shooting, I wrote about how frustrating it is when something like this happens, there’s widespread outrage all over social media for a day, and then we wake up the next morning and go about our lives.

Maybe it’s just recency bias, but it doesn’t feel like that has been the case with the Parkland shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Social media has been a big part of that, giving voices to the students who survived the massacre. Every day, I see a new viral tweet from one of the surviving students with a message of hope or a plea for change.

That’s why I think it’s pretty cool that MLB has decided to do this. Ratings aren’t exactly through the roof for spring training games, but it’s their first opportunity to do something like this since the shooting occurred. This weekend, MLB is having the players on all 30 teams wear the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School cap before their games this weekend, and players also have the option to continue wearing the hat during the actual games (Imagine being the asshole who chooses not to?).

No, the act of wearing a baseball hat isn’t going to bring back the lives that were lost, or serve as the start of some movement for change. It is, however, a way to say, “We haven’t forgotten what happened,” and that’s a step in the right direction.
