CFB Media Days Kinda Stink, But They Remind Us Football Is Coming

As a sports fan, the end of July is by far the worst time of the year. Sure, it’s the summer and you can go to the beach or get on a boat or whatever. But other than baseball, there is literally nothing else going on. This is when the lack of football is most glaring. It’s god awful.

Insert college football media days. Talkin’ Season. Where everybody with a microphone thinks they have all the answers, every fan base thinks ‘THIS IS OUR YEAR!’ and we get a preview of the upcoming season.

The SEC and Big 12 are happening now. The ACC goes later this week. The Big Ten and the Pac 12 next week. I don’t know why anybody would want to watch a non-power 5 media day, but those are happening too. (PS, I can only imagine how much money ESPN pays for the SEC Network to be there this week. Woof.)

Its only day 1 and the Big 12 is coming out swinging…

Cry me a river.

So are coaches…

Gig ‘Em.

Anyway, I’ve been to SEC Media Days a few times. It’s an absolute circus. But for the most part, they’re boring as shit. Coaches and players talk for literally hours and say absolutely nothing. Hundreds of media members furiously hang on every word while awkwardly mingling with each other drinking soda and plowing through bags of chips.

You haven’t seen awkward until you’ve seen a bunch of sports writers in one gigantic room for a week.

But since it’s the first media availability since spring football, Media Days are covered like a State of the Union. It’s pretty much like your lecture courses in college, except four really long days and about football. (The hangovers are much worse too.)

And fans show up to these things too. I don’t get why anybody would want to stand in a lobby and watch people with credentials ride escalators up to where the “action” is actually happening, but to each their own.

I’ve only covered SEC Media Days in person, but Alabama fans are the craziest IMO. I swear, they show up and stand around for hours just hoping to breathe the same air as Nick Saban. It’s wild.

But if you’re in to long presentations, hearing “who will be your starting QB?” asked a million times and listening to a bunch of ‘coach-speak’ filibusters, Media Days are for you!

Sure they’re boring. But my friends, this means football season is riiiiiiight around the corner.

Only six more Saturdays.
