Goddamn, Las Vegas Raiders. If you’re going to ditch your fanbase, leave them stuck in a place whose city nickname should be “San Francisco’s Ass” to go live off $2 billion worth of gambling revenue courtesy of America’s Sodom & Gomorrah, this is how you do it. This just gives me goosebumps on top of my goosebumps.
And the thing is, I hate the Raiders. At least I used to. I grew up hating them. It was a part of who I was, on a subcellular level. But that is such a thing of the past. It’s like hating Cuba. You know there used to be a perfectly valid reason to, but that’s a relic from your grandfather’s day. And we’ve moved on.
Besides, I never could bring myself to hate Al Davis. How could you? The guy was the inventor of not giving fucks. The ultimate rogue. The lone wolf. The rebel who lived by his own rules, his own code. Only. Like a real life Clint Eastwood cowboy in a track suit with a neck chain on his glasses. Al Davis laid down the law and then he broke it. So you bring his quotes into this little teaser trailer and you have won me over before you even show us the animation of the stadium. Which looks incredible. Like a space station, with a 120 X 53.3 yard Rectangle of Dreams in the middle. Al might have liked Oakland, but he would have loved this move by his special son. I’m not a big Vegas guy, but when they build this, I will come.

P.S. This is kind of a non-sequitor because it has nothing to do with this other than it’s about Al Davis. But there’s a new book coming out about him that says when the Raiders traded Randy Moss to the Patriots in 2007, the original deal was only for a 6th round pick. Al had just hired Lane Kiffin as his coach and Mark Jackon as his GM and Moss made it clear there was no way he’d play another season in Oakland. So Jackson worked out a trade with Belichick. When Davis found out how little he’d gotten in return for Moss he was “aghast,” and called Belichick himself to berate him for swindling his new GM. Belichick said all he did was agree to Jackson’s asking price, but out of respect to Davis, asked what would be fair and they agreed to a 4th rounder instead. I like stories.
