Philly Stand Up! The Word "Jawn" Has Finally Made It To Google Dictionary
First things first. For everybody reading this who is not from the Greater Philadelphia Area, this blog isn’t for you. So feel free to move right along. Don’t ask “what the hell is a Jawn” because you’re just going to look like an idiot since the definition is right there for you. Just understand that you’re not going to understand it and then go about the rest of your day.
With that out of the way, I’ve always been a little conflicted with the word “jawn”. Much like the rest of you, I grew up with jawn as part of my vocabulary. I don’t force it into every sentence. Hell, I can probably count on my hands the amount of times I unironically use the word per year. But it’s still a part of my vocabulary. I don’t have an issue with the word itself. I just have an issue with the way that people from Philly explain it to outsiders. Usually you just go with the simple “it just means anything you want it to be”. Which, quite frankly, is a bullshit explanation. Like if I didn’t know what a “jawn” was and I asked somebody only to get that explanation in return, I’d have to punch them in the dick for being one. I’m just asking a simple question and you come back all pretentious and shit acting like you’re better than me for knowing a made up word that nobody else outside of the Greater Philadelphia Area uses? Fuck off, bud.
But now the word is legitimized on Google Dictionary. Now anytime some asshole from New York asks you what does “jawn” mean, you can just Google it for him and then he can go back to eating his gabagool or whatever it is that people in New York do. Now you’re not the one looking like a dick for giving the most confusing definition ever, Google is. Only issue I have now is the example sentence. Pretty sure the correct Philly grammar here would be “yo them jawns inexpensive”. Also–fuck Google for thinking people from Philly only buy cheap shit.
