You Have To Be Such A Sick, Twisted Dumbass To Be A Goalie In Today's NHL

What do you think the average age of NHL goaltenders is right now? Probably somewhere in that 25-27 range.

So let's just go back in history real quick to remember who was between 25 years ago in the NHL. You had guys like Martin Brodeur, Dominik Hasek, and Patrick Roy. We're talking the 3 greatest goalies to ever play the game, all playing at the same time, all at around the time when all the current NHL goaltenders would be kids watching on TV and having dreams of one day becoming an NHL goalie themselves. It was the greatest generation of goalies the game has ever seen.

And what a fucked up dream it turned out to be for all those kids who actually made it to the NHL today.

That's all just from one night of action. You have the Nate Dogg looking like he's playing against a bunch of 6th graders out there. Evgeny Svechnikov with zero regard for human life tucking away his 3rd career Michigan. Alexander Ovechkin sets the record for most seasons with at least 30 goalies for the 18th time in his career. And on top of it all, Auston Matthews is having the best goal scoring season out of quite literally every single player currently in the league with his 66th of the year.

Night in and night out, the NHL strictly consists of highlights of goalies getting their shit rocked. You had all these current goalies growing up with idols like Brodeur, Hasek and Roy. You can understand how there were so many kids who were eager to hop between the pipes. But what is the NHL going to look like 25 years from now when every kid today is watching MacKinnon score the most nonchalant hat trick on the same night that Auston Matthews becomes the first player to hit 66 on the year since Mario in '94-95. No shot in hell are any of these kids dreaming about being a goalie. Nobody dreams about wanting to get Michigan'd. Unless you're a sick, twisted son of a bitch who gets off on the misery.
