Kevin Durant Shits All Over The Knicks, Says Top Players Don't Sign There Because They Aren't Cool

I’m sure this will go over well with butthurt Knicks fans who may or may not still be upset that Durant didn’t even give them a meeting in free agency. Listening to that clip though, where’s the lie? The Knicks have stunk for decades and they are owned by perhaps the worst owner in all of sports. New York may be a Knicks city because of their history, but they certainly aren’t the best team in that city by any means. If you’re an elite free agent you no longer need a big market to build your brand, and while there is no denying the Knicks basketball history and their importance to the sport, NBA players nowadays could give two shits about that stuff. You see the same thing happen with teams like the Celtics who also like to jerk themselves off to their history. In no way do young elite free agents give a shit about what happened 40 years ago. That mystique that a lot of those fanbases care about couldn’t mean less to players today and the sooner these historic franchises realize that the better.

Is it a little weird that NBA free agents care about franchises that are “cool”? Maybe. But that’s how today’s generation thinks whether it makes sense or not. Take a look at what just happened in NYC. There is no reason why with two max slots that the Knicks shouldn’t have landed both Kyrie and Durant. But the perception around that franchise and the fact that they aren’t “cool” played a role. The Nets are new, the Nets are competitive and are rebranding themselves to up their “cool” factor. Aside from basketball reasons right now it’s just cooler to play for the Nets than the Knicks. That sounds crazy, but that’s the reality. Honestly outside of making a deep run or getting rid of their owner I’m not sure how they fix that. Especially when a lot of other “cooler” teams are lining up to have a ton of cap space these next few summers.

As you can expect, people of course are coming at Durant for these comments, and since he has all the time in the world he’s responding to each and every one
