Didi Gregorius Told His Teammates He "Tore Everything In His Elbow" Mid-Game During The ALDS, But Refused To Miss One Play All Series

That folks, is MY SHORTSTOP. When we got that update that Didi needed Tommy John following the series I think it came as a giant shock to most of us. Did he have the best series in the ALDS? For sure not, but we thought that was because of the torn cartilage in his wrist. Not because he tore “everything” in his elbow. When you look back on the series you can tell he was absolutely hampered by something after uncharacteristically bouncing a few balls to first and struggling at the plate. He was not himself, but to think he tore everything in his elbow and just played through it is insane. There’s not many guys who would suffer that injury and refuse to come out of the game. One guy that comes to mind is Derek Jeter. No one really talks about how Didi has made the seamless transition from post-Jeter life, but he absolutely has. The guy took over and stabilized the position in no time. He was brought in as a defensive wizard and rewarded the Yankees with gold by becoming a top 10 hitting shortstop in the game.

His injury comes at maybe the most unfortunate time for a player in his situation. Didi was most certainly going to be extended this offseason somewhere to the tune of 5 years and $90 million. That’s not happening anymore, but I’m hopeful he does get some kind of extension. Maybe he takes a two year deal to reprove his worth in hopes of cashing in post surgery? I fucking hope so. Machado shouldn’t stop this plan. Didi plays short, Manny plays third. While Didi is out, Manny becomes the shortstop and lives out his dream for half the season. Make it happen, Cash.
