This Weekend Couldn't Have Gone Any Better For The Orioles, As They Get Swept By The Royals And Are On The Fast Track To The #1 Overall Pick

Same shit, just a different day for the Birds from Baltimore this weekend. They had a series against the 2nd worst team in baseball, as is tradition, they got swept. It was 2 blowouts and a walkoff, couldn’t get much worse for this team. They couldn’t pitch, they couldn’t hit, they couldn’t field, it was not great. While that may sound embarrassing, it’s not. The Royals basically just screwed themselves in the long run! The Orioles were battling Kansas City to get the #1 overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, and now it looks like the Orioles will hold that pick after the sweep. Baltimore is now 40-97 with Kansas City at 45-91, a 5.5 game “lead” for the Orioles over KC in the hunt for #1, we’re looking good people.

This series had everything for the Orioles. Game 1 started off with my lord and savior, Cedric Mullins, leading off the game with his third homer of the year, the Royals tied it up in the bottom of the first and then would go on to win a laugher, 9-2. Game 2 saw Trey Mancini hit his 21st homer of the season to put the Orioles up late, only to see Whit Merrifield hit his first career walk-off homer off of Mychal Givens who absolutely stinks this season. Game 3 turned into another laugher after the Orioles scored early and first after Jonathan Villar homered in the first, but that would be all she wrote for the Orioles as David Hess followed up his best start of the season with one of his worsts. He gave up five runs (four earned), nine hits, and only struck out three in four innings. That five runs would have been enough for the high powered Royals, but they weren’t done and put up another four spot against Mike Wright Jr. 9-1 was the final for this final game and the Orioles were swept out of lowly Kansas City, what a house of horrors for them. By my count, this was the team’s 15th time getting swept in a series that was longer than 2 games, that is mind bottling. Just unreal that they’ve been swept that many times. Kansas City had only swept one other series this season, the first one after the ASB, so nice timing for them to get hot.

The Orioles haven’t played in a series that mattered since 2014 it seems like, so this isn’t a bummer, especially because it moves them that much closer to that top overall pick. We know there isn’t any guarantee that the #1 pick will ever pan out, especially as an Oriole, but obviously it is in the best interest of the team to add any and all weapons. It’s pretty clear that high school shortstop, Bobby Witt Jr is THE guy in this draft, and what do you know, the Orioles seem to have a hole at shortstop, so it seems like this Witt fella could be a good answer to their problem.
