Shoutout To The Men Of Team USA For Boycotting A Tournament They Hate And Suck At In Solidarity With The Women's Team
In case you haven’t been keeping up to date with the battle between the Women’s US Hockey Team and USA Hockey, here’s a quick rundown. USA Hockey has been, for the lack of a better term, fucking the US Women’s Team in terms of salary/compensation. In a statement given by the players, they said that they get paid for about 6 months around the Olympics. Which sounds good and everything considering USA Hockey is not a professional team. However, they are only given $1,000 per month. Now the men’s team doesn’t get paid at all for playing in the Olympics. But you have to remember that they all play in the NHL where they are making millions of dollars and don’t have to spend 6 months training. The women get whatever the NWHL can throw their way and then that’s about it. So yeah, clearly they deserve way more compensation in some way or another and they are boycotting the World Championships until they come up with some sort of agreement. Team USA has won either gold or silver at every Women’s World Championships in the tournament’s 17-year-history. So yeah, Team USA refusing to play is going to have a huge impact on that tournament. Which then brings us to the men… who… well….

Team USA fucking blows at the IIHF Men’s World Championships. Year after year, the Worlds is one of the worst tournaments the game of hockey has to offer. It always starts in the middle of the NHL playoffs so most of the best players in the world (aside from Ovechkin) are still busy with that while the tournament is going on. It’s at the end of the season when most guys would rather be on a beach somewhere away from the game for the few weeks of freedom they actually get. And the last time Team USA won gold was in 1960. Since then they’ve had 5 bronze medal finishes and that’s it. 57 years and they’ve come in 3rd place 5 times. So yeah. All the credit in the world goes out to the USA Men’s Hockey Program for refusing to play in the World Championships in solidarity with the women. I’m sure it took a lot for them to come to this decision. They’re leaving so much on the line here. I mean, who else is ever going to win 4th place now that Team USA will be sitting this one out? You’re telling me that these guys who just played 82 games in the NHL have to take a week away from the rink instead of traveling to France and Germany to get their shit pushed in Sweden, Russia and Canada? For shame.
In all seriousness, I get it’s a nice gesture from the men to have the women’s back like this. It’s the thought that counts. It’s just funny how convenient this is for the guys.
