Jonathon Pappelbon On The 2014 Phillies: 'If I Was A Gambling Man I Would Take Us To Go All The Way'

Solid statement for a team who finished with the 3rd worst record in the NL last year and has only gotten older and slower. Keep this man out of AC before he loses his entire contract and is forced to give a few dozen handys to get toll money for the way home.

“He’s just showing confidence in his team, what is he supposed to say?” How about we’re going to fucking fight day in and day out and do whatever it takes to win instead of saying you’re good enough already. Or even better, how about nothing. Absolutely nothing and prove it on the diamond. Anything is better than this pseudo-confidence that has been spewing from this 73 win squad from the very top in the front office to the bat boys.

I actually like Pappelbon when he shuts his mouth. Is he worth the money? Probably not. But he’s been relatively consistent as a closer during his time here. I just don’t understand how Ruin Tomorrow and his players can say this sort of stuff right now without actually proving it. This isn’t ’07-’12 anymore where you’re obviously the cream of the crop. How is this team different from last year other than everyone of merit being a year older? Marlon Byrd, AJ Burnett and Bobby Abreu. That’s it. Yeah, Mike Adams, Ryan Howard and Ben Revere are now “healthy”, but even then it’s not going to give you that 20 win swing needed to get back to the playoffs. Chase Utley’s knees and Jimmy Rollins legs aren’t getting any younger, either.

This team is making it really hard to root for them.
