Flyers 3, Hurricanes 2 (OT) | (7-9-5)

Well for the first time in November, the fans in Philadelphia got to witness a win at home after the Flyers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime on the night of inducting Rod Brind’Amour into the Flyers Hall of Fame. Before we get started here, let’s just make a quick list of everything that has happened since the last home win in Philly back on October 24th when the Flyers beat the Rangers in a shootout.

– Halloween

– Entitled little brats in college started protesting on campuses all across the country

– Rob Ryan had a job

– The “Dab” was both invented and killed

– We all watched Pres as he miserably attempted the 6 12 18 24 Challenge.

But that’s all over now since the Flyers are as back as ever so let’s get right to it….

For The First Time In 167 Minutes, The Philadelphia Flyers Scored A Goal

After getting shutout in back-to-back games, the Flyers finally found the back of the net here on the powerplay in the 2nd period courtesy of Brayden Schenn. It should also be noted that Schenn made a great play at the beginning of this powerplay to keep the play alive off the offensive draw. I’m a huge fan of keeping Baby Schenn up on the top line whether that be with Giroux and Raffl or Giroux and Voracek. I love seeing Hakstol reaarange the lines just to try to get something going and I think that this Schenn experiment is the best thing he’s come up with so far. I don’t know if this is an actual stat or not but 100% of Brayden Schenn’s goals in his career have come from right on top of the crease and going hard to the net. When you’re playing with guys like Giroux and Voracek, those are the opportunities you’re going to get and Schenn has elevated his game at this point to where I think he’ll be able to cash in on a lot of those opportunities.

The Special Teams Came To Play Tonight

It doesn’t get much better than scoring a shorthanded goal on Rod Brind’Amour night in Philadelphia. And this right here is exactly what happens when you shoot first coming down on a 2-on-1. Great decision making by Coots here. Hockey is such a simple sport and for the past few games, the Flyers have been trying to complicate it all too much. When you don’t force that pass across on a 2-on-1, just get shots on the net and crash hard, good things like this happen. I thought the Flyers PK was a perfect amount of aggressive all night long and not only did they play well in their own end defensively, but they also got plenty of chances like this one. The Flyers scored 3 goals last night. This one shorthanded and then 2 more on the powerplay. They were long overdue to have a night like this after having so many chances in the past few games so we can all let out a little sigh of relief that the pucks finally found their way to the back on the net. And none more so than this overtime winner from Shayne Gostisbehere.

Keep Ghost Bear Up For The Rest Of The Season [dot] edu

This is definitely a lost season for the Philadelphia Flyers. They’re going to stay near the bottom of the standings all year long and at just a quarter of the way through the season, the next 3 are going to be long and probably miserable. But Shayne Ghostisbehere has brought a rush of fresh air into this organization and to the fan base because the kid is just so much fun to watch. The Flyers, though scoreless in 2 of them, have actually gotten points in 4 out of the 5 games that Ghost has been up for this year. And he’s already the QB/QB2 on that first powerplay unit with Giroux and he already has 2 goals which really should be 3 on the season. He plays well defensively and I think the biggest thing he has going for him is his speed. If he takes a shot that’s off target, you can bet your ass that Ghost is leading the pack on the back check just because the kid has a serious set of wheels on him. So despite how the season goes overall, at least Flyers fans have the Ghost Bear to be excited about. And to think that Morin and Provorov can be just as good, if not better… well then let’s go.

Still Not A Full 60 Minute Effort But Whatever

The Flyers had a not-good but not-bad 1st period which ended at 0-0. Then they had a terrific 2nd period in which they outshot the Hurricanes 18-6 and outscored them 2-0. And then you could tell that the Flyers started to get a little nervous about protecting the lead in the 3rd period and as soon as the Hurricanes scored to make it a 2-1 game, they were brutally outplayed for the rest of the game. Luckily Neuvirth made a few huge saves and luckily the Hurricanes missed a couple prime chances to score again because they had plenty of opportunities to get more goals toward the end of that 3rd period. I’d say overall the Flyers played a really really solid 35-40 minutes of that game. The rest, not so much.

The Other Guys

– First off, shoutout to Sean Couturier for drawing the penalty which lead to the Flyers getting a PP in the overtime. Just a good hard take to the net from Coots in which he was able to use his size and strength to get the call. Need more of that from Couturier. Need lots more of that.

– Sam Gagner left the game and didn’t return after smacking his face on the ice after this hit from Brad Malone

Not that it was a dirty hit or anything but the next shift, Bellemare went after Malone and dropped the gloves to stick up for Gagner. I wouldn’t say Belle got the best of Malone but it’s great to see this team having each other’s backs out there. It’s an “us against the world” type of mentality in that locker room and it’s a good sign to see they haven’t given up on one another.

– Rod Brind’Amour Has The Coolest Little Kid Ever

TMNT over everything. Leonardo ain’t a bad call by this little fella either. It’s easy for anyone to say they’re a Michaelangelo fan but Leonardo guys just get life.

– Fun little fact about Rod Brind’Amour: during every away trip for the Hurricanes, Brindy goes to the nearest Planet Fitness just to set off the lunk alarm and then just walks out. His speech last night was great and it was awesome for the Flyers to honor him in that way.
