Finalists For The 1st Class Of Inductees Into The World Video Game Hall Of Fame Are Announced, Quite A Few Snubs
Via – The new World Video Game Hall of Fame announced the finalists for its inaugural class Tuesday. This year’s finalists are: Angry Birds, DOOM, FIFA, The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, The Oregon Trail, Pac-Man, Pokémon, Pong, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, and World of Warcraft. The Strong Museum of Play said it received thousands of nominations. The video game hall of fame was created to recognize electronic games of all types _ arcade, console, computer, handheld and mobile. To be inducted, a game has to have enjoyed sustained popularity and influenced the video game industry, pop culture or society in general. The inductees will be announced June 4. The number of inductees has not yet been specified.
First they get the Natty Championships of Heroes of the Dorm aired on ESPN and now they’re getting their own Hall Of Fame. Someone crack open a 2 liter of Mountain Dew Code Red because the gaming community is about to turn up. Now the line up of finalists for the first ever class inducted into the Hall isn’t a bad one. Zelda, The Oregon Trail, Pac-Man, Pokemon, Tetris. They’re all greats. But get Angry Birds the fuck out of my face. I still don’t fully understand what Minecraft really is. And as much as I love FIFA, it just seems a little unAmerican to give FIFA the nod over Madden in the inaugural class. Still not sure how many of these games that have been nominated will actually be inducted, but I think it’s worth pointing out a couple more blasphemous snubs.
Don’t get me wrong, I know that Super Mario Bros. is a top notch game. I know it’s the granddaddy, the OG, and that without Super Mario Bros, there would be no Super Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros. But this isn’t a charity case. This is the goddamn Video Game Hall of Fame we’re talking about. And when push comes to shove, Kart and Smash and just superior games.
Where the FUCK is any mention of any of the Tony Hawk Pro Skaters? Probably the greatest games of all time. If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. But if you give him THPS with the perfect balance cheat on, he’ll never have to eat another actual meal in his life because he’ll be too busy busting out hella sick manuals and grinds. Not only should Tony Hawk Pro Skater get into the Hall for its contents as a game itself, but it also deserves a spot for having the greatest soundtracks of all time.
And lastly, I know it doesn’t deserve to get nominated with the first class ever, but I will lose my goddamn mind if NHL Hitz 2002 doesn’t make it into the Hall at some point. NHL ’94 was awesome, the Gretzky games were cool as well, but nothing will ever be more fun than being the Avalanche in Hitz and just going to work.
That’s about it, I guess. I can live with the rest of the nominations and chances are I’ll forget that there’s a Video Game Hall of Fame by the time they have the actual inductions. But for now, I’m pretty pissed about no Tony Hawk.
