Evgeni Malkin, Wayne Simmonds And The New Jersey Devils Are Your 3 Metro Stars Of The Night

It was a busy day/night in the Metro division with 7 out of 8 teams all playing. The Flyers shutout the New York Rangers 3-0 at MSG, the Caps beat the Maple Leafs 4-2, the Islanders came back to beat the Bolts 3-2, the Penguins ended up losing to the Oilers in a shootout, the Blue Jackets lost 3-1 to the Blues and the New Jersey Devils came back to knockoff the top team in the league in a 3-2 overtime win over the Canadiens. So in no real order other than coolest to least coolest, here are your top 3 performers of the day in the Metro division.

1) Geno With Another Beauty

That’s the 2nd “holy shit” highlight reel type of goal from Evgeni Malkin on the season so far and both have come while the Penguins were wearing those throwback third jerseys. This one was just insane. If any player in the NHL has legal rights to patent the spin-o-rama, I’d say it goes to Patrick Kane. But Malkin just swiped a play out of Kaner’s book here and it was so filthy. Good news for Penguins fans, there are rumblings right now that the team is going to be getting new home and away jerseys for next season. As long as they are the biggest idiots in the league (which they very well might be), I’d have to imagine they go with the vintage look for full time. Obviously Malkin likes playing in those sweaters so look out.

2. Choo Choo, bitch. The Wayne Train Just Pulled Into Town

3 points on 2 goals and an assist in a 3-0 win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden yesterday for Wayne Simmonds. Simmer was all over the ice yesterday and was playing out of his mind for all 3 periods. Nothing quite as pretty as this goal but it was a classic, hard-nosed type of game for Wayne Simmonds as the Flyers won their 2nd game in a row. This was easily one of the Flyers’ best performances of the entire season so far. They generated a ton of chances offensively and really bottled up the neutral zone to give the Rangers pretty much nothing to work with all day. Simmonds led the way but it was a great full team effort.

3. Are People Paying Attention To The New Jersey Devils Yet?

The New Jersey Devils are one of the biggest surprise teams of the season. I still don’t think that they’re a playoff team come April but they have been winning some great hockey games and seem to be in every game they’ve played over the past month or so. I’m sure most people had them written off as a bottom of the barrel team at the beginning of the season but they’re a team that can/will bite you in the ass. Obviously as witnessed by the Montreal Canadiens last night after giving up a late game lead and losing in overtime off this absurd drop pass by Adam Henrique on the breakaway.

Honorable Mention:

– John Tortorella and the Columbus Blue Jackets for starting a feud with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend. So if Torts wants to go to war with the Pittsburgh Penguins, then I’m all in on Team Torts.

– Dylan McIlrath with the hit of the week on Nick Schultz

Nothing wrong with that hit there. Just a good, clean steamroll.
