At Most, We Only Have 8 Games Left Of The 2016-17 NHL Season

Last night was a stark reminder that the NHL season is coming to an end. There were no Stanley Cup Playoffs to watch. There were no NBA playoffs to watch. As a Phillies fan, I would have preferred if there was no MLB to watch. It was miserable. The only thing left to do was either A) go be social. Which is incredibly overrated. Or B) re-watch old episodes of Trailer Park Boys on Netflix. Which is actually a great way to spend a night but it’s just not the same.

The fact of the matter is that after tonight’s game 7 between Ottawa and Pittsburgh, we’re down to the Stanley Cup Final. To borrow an analogy from Big Cat–it’s the last bite of the sandwich. Remember how full our plate was back in September when the World Cup of Hockey was just starting? It felt like we had a lifetime supply of hockey ahead of us. We were living large. Flying by the seat of our pants. Life was good. It felt like we were invincible. As if it would go on forever and hockey season would be immortal. Now he we are. 8 months later and we have a game 7 tonight, then only 4-7 games after that.

I guess… I guess I’m just scared. I don’t even remember what life was like before the hockey season started. We’ll have some things to take our mind off of it, for sure. We’ll have the expansion draft on June 21. We’ll have the Entry Draft on June 23 and 24. We’ll have free agency open up on July 1. There’s going to be hockey things going on in the world but as far as having a few games to watch every night? Fuhgettaboudit.

So maybe there are a few of you out there who are scared like me. And I’m just here to let you know that you are not alone. I’m not going to say it’ll be easy. But together, we’ll be able to make it through until next September. We just have to stay strong and stay united. Now go enjoy the last remaining 24 periods of NHL hockey we have left.
