Am I Gonna Have To Go To War With Rick Fox For Saying eSports Will Overtake The NHL In 2 Years?
I’m not naive. I realize that hockey still is and will continue to be a niche sport. I get that it will never overtake the NFL because the NFL will always be king. I realize it will never overtake the NBA and MLB because playing hockey gets expensive between all the pads and paying for ice time and there will just always been 50 times more kids playing basketball in America than hockey. The NHL will remain #4 and I’m perfectly fine with that. This isn’t a plea for non-hockey fans to #PleaseLikeMySport. If you don’t like hockey, fine, that’s your loss. We’re better off without you. But how fucking dare Rick Fox say that in just 2 years, eSports will takeover the NHL for that 4 spot? In just 730 measly days he thinks that professional gaming will be bigger than the NHL? Video games. Nerds. I’ve never felt more disrespected in my entire life.
You wanna know what else people probably thought was going to be bigger than the NHL like 10 years ago? The World Poker Tour. Every time you turned on ESPN, there was a new tournament on. There were poker video games. There was this. There was that. And where’s the World Poker Tour now? Exactly where eSports will be in 5 years. I’ll let Rick Fox have his fun for now. He’s an eSports franchise owner (whatever that means). Of course he has to say that business is booming because he’s invested in it’s success. But once this weird little generation of people who watch PewDiePie videos grows up and stops watching other people playing video games, you can draw your line of chalk around eSports. Then it’s back to stuffing nerds into lockers instead of pretending that they’re “athletes”. The world will return to normal and Slick Rick, with his handsome jawline, can go screw.
