According To Science, "Wannabe" By The Spice Girls Is The Catchiest Song Ever

BBCThe Spice Girls’ debut hit, Wannabe, is the catchiest UK hit single, an online experiment has suggested. Participants recognised the song in 2.3 seconds, compared with an average of five seconds for other popular hits. Researchers developed the interactive game, called Hooked on Music, as part of a scientific study to unlock the secrets of what makes music memorable…People who played the game were asked if they recognised a song, which was randomly selected from more than 1,000 clips of best-selling songs, dating from the 1940s until the present day. The Spice Girls’ debut single, which spent seven weeks at number one during 1996, was the most quickly recognised song by participants, taking an average of 2.29 seconds.

I dare you to listen to “Wannabe” and not start singing your little heart out within the first 10 seconds. Scratch that, I double dare you. I’ve come to realize that there are two types of people in this world. Those who go wild and scream the “slam your body down and wind it all around” lyric, and those who just hate fun and want everyone in the world to be miserable. While there’s little to no argument against “Wannabe” being the catchiest song of all time, I did have some minor discrepancies with the rest of the list and the rest of the article. First of all, I hate how the Brits spell recognized. It’s called a ‘z’ you rotten-tooth bastards. Use it every once in a while. And then after the Spice Girls, the list starts to get pretty pretty weak.

1. Spice Girls – Wannabe
2. Lou Bega – Mambo No 5
3. Survivor – Eye Of The Tiger
4. Lady Gaga – Just Dance
5. ABBA – SOS
6. Roy Orbison – Pretty Woman
7. Michael Jackson – Beat It
8. Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You
9. The Human League – Don’t You Want Me
10. Aerosmith – I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing

Maybe I’m in the minority here but while I think Mambo No. 5 is a good song, putting it as number 2 on any list in the world is a disservice to humanity. It’s fun to hear at a wedding maybe but if someone puts it on in the car you can rest assured that I’ll jump out, tuck and roll. I’m not gonna say anything about Eye Of The Tiger coming in at number 3 because I don’t want Smitty to fire me today, and the rest of the list just sucks on ice. I need this survey to be done here in the US of A where we’re all not a bunch of stupid idiots because the Brits seem like they’ve never even heard of One Direction before. Which is weird because they themselves are from bloody London. Need some Taylor, need Hey Ya, Trumpets, Bailando. Basically every song that is awesome didn’t make this list and that’s truly devastating. But yeah, I can’t really argue against the Spice Girls. That song will continue to be a hit until the day the Earth stops spinning.
