Mets Bringing Back Jose Reyes
JOSE, JOSE JOSE JOSEEEE, JOSE, JOOOOOSEEEEEEEE.
He’s baaaaack. Much like Derrick Rose to the Knicks, I am under no illusions about what Reyes is. Hes a shadow of his former self. Nobody with a brain is expecting Jose Reyes to play like its 2006.
But here’s there thing – this team needs all the help they can get. If we were firing on all cylinders, I wouldnt want any part of this. Bringing in a guy from the old regime with this domestic violence case looming over him seems like a potential major headache. But if you look at some of the SLOP that the Mets are trotting out there pretty regularly, theres no reason we shouldnt try to recapture something with him. Hes a former batting champ that had all the athleticism in the world. He knows New York. And by all accounts he’s THRILLED to be back. Obviously Miami and Toronto were disastrous for him, so maybe this return to Queens jumpstarts him a little bit. It doesnt take much to out-perform some of the replacement players the Mets are throwing out there. Plus they are the single slowest team in the history of baseball. Even Reyes at half the speed he once had is a bigger stolen base threat than any of the statues they run out there now. Reyes makes sense on a low risk, high reward type of flyer.
As for the domestic violence thing – obviously Reyes is a scumbag for that. Truth be told I dont know all the details. Only that she ended up in the hospital and it was significant enough to get a suspension from MLB. You cant spin zone your way around that one. Thats a shithead move. But I dont watch baseball based on these guys being upstanding citizens off the field. I dont think of them as role models. I just wanna win baseball games and so I for one can just say “Yea, this dude is a piece of shit but I hope he plays good baseball for the Mets.” I dont know what youre supposed to tell your kids if they ask you about it. I dont know how any of that works. But thats not why I watch sports. Hopefully Reyes has done right by that woman and tried to make up for his horrendous ways and maybe he’s gotten some help. But I just want to see the Mets win ball games, run the bases a little bit, and enjoy some nostalgia from the 2006 season.
Maybe we’ll even get to see DW and Reyes back together. Most likely in the training room or perhaps side by side hospital beds when they’re both injured. But maybe we’ll see them together.
Terry says he might play some outfield? Theres obviously a whole mess of guys that can kinda, sorta play third base or the left side of the infield. Really not sure how this is gonna work and there’s every chance it doesnt at all. But like I said they gotta try something. Plus this hopefully means the return of ProfessOR Reyes:
