Islanders Ink Former Bruins Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg

why

Hockey’s back! And with it reemerges Garth Snow’s 3rd Annual Pre-Season Deal From the Clouds.

Two years ago it was Super Saturday, when what seemed like a quiet Saturday in October ended with both Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk on planes to New York. Last year it was a random day in September where we saw Garth move Grabner to Toronto. This year it’s the [completely out of the blue] signing of former Bruin Dennis Seidenberg.

The main question is obviously where Capuano wants to play the defenseman who’s looking to rebound after being run out of Boston. With the notion of having to trade Travis Hamonic behind us, Ryan Pulock looking to expand on what was a promising rookie year, Nick Leddy being Nick Leddy and depth d-men like de Haan, Boychuk, and Hickey rounding out the bunch, I can’t see Seids [do people call him Seids? Im going to call him Seids] coming into the mix and doing much to shake up what already seems like an outlined defensive group.

At 35, Seidenberg’s experience definitely played a part into why Garth went after him. At a clean $1M a year, Seids is a someone who’s cheap, knowledgable, and far more qualified to hold down the 7th d-man spot than a young Scott Mayfield or Adam Pelech, but like the Carkners and Boultons before him, his biggest contribution will be his part in helping grow the young talent around him.

He’s not a new face in the league, and he’s cheap, but save for any injuries or a severe dropoff in play from the likes of Pulock, CDH, or Hickey, I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of Seidenberg outside of plugging in when needed. That said, the fact that he reportedly turned down 7 other teams to play in Brooklyn means he isn’t expecting to wear a suit every night.

We’re about 5 minutes into hockey being back, and Garth Snow is already up to his usual ways.
