Giants Offseason Starts Off With A Bang As Beatty, Schwartz & Beason Are Cut

Capture1Capture2Capture3And so it begins. Some big names on the chopping block today, but none of them are a complete surprise. Jon Beason is simply too broken and, as Graziano reported, may very well just retire anyway after yet another knee surgery upcoming. Will Beatty missed all of last season with a pec injury he parlayed into a rotator cuff issue that required surgery. Bear in mind this is the same Will Beatty who cashed in as a “premier left tackle” in 2012 only to flop in 2013. Beatty had a solid bounce-back campaign in 2014 but between multiple injuries that cost him all of last season, closing in on 31 years old, his price tag & the emergence of Ereck Flowers Big Blue just decided to start anew.
Geoff Schwartz is probably the biggest disappointment of the bunch. When he was inked prior to last year it was to bolster an o-line that was one of the worst in the league. Schwartz was one of the best RG’s available at the time & it was a big fetch for the G-Men. When healthy, Schwartz/Richburg/Pugh were a very good interior trio. “When healthy” only accounted for 13 of 32 games as a Giant though. A broken toe, ankle & leg is hardly his fault but it’s hard to argue with the Giants cutting their losses despite reports that the guard is 100% healthy.
These moves give Jerry Reese an expected $60 million on top of the 10th pick in the draft to restock his roster with talent for Ben McAdoo’s head coaching debut. This will almost certainly be a make-or-break moment for a GM many think should’ve left with Coughlin & these cuts. He’s got his work cut out for him though. He’s gotta make the right calls for the right side of the offensive line as well as just about every defensive position. Plus, there’s still decisions to be made on bigger names like JPP, Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle, etc. This is the beginning of the biggest overhaul in recent Giants history and rightfully so. It’s too early to speculate which free agents they’ll focus on but they’ll be in the mix for plenty. Let’s just hope the new faces coming to NY over the next few months bring the new results fans have been waiting for.
