Brendan Smith Signs With Rangers For Four More Years

Smith

Smith

4 years, $4.35M AAV. Nice pay day for the 28 year-old defenseman who Rangers fans fell head over heels for after his top-notch play beside Brady Skjei this postseason. I was hoping to get him closer to $4M but the term is perfect to utilize what should be the prime of his career and not be hamstrung as he creeps toward his mid-30’s. Outside of Shattenkirk, Brendan Smith was arguably the top back-end UFA with the ability to play both sides, bring a mean streak and contribute a bit offensively. With Dan Girardi gone, this deal should signify a commitment to Smith as a top-4 defender in clutch situations instead of being part of a forgotten pair by AV.

Assuming the Kevin Klein retirement rumors are true, this leaves the Blueshirts with around $18.5M to get Zibanejad locked up long-term, re-sign Fast, nab a backup for Hank & a top-2 center to replace Stepan. Fans might have to pump the brakes a bit on a Shattenkirk homecoming but I wouldn’t completely rule it out yet. Some of their other holes could be filled via trade, although I’m not sure what other pieces Gorton would be willing to part with. A right-shot top-4 facilitator on the blue line is still a need for this squad & if Shatty isn’t solely chasing money, there’s still a chance. If he’s not gonna get top dollar though, he’s gonna get term & another extensive deal with a late-20’s defenders is a scary notion. With the market opening in just 3 days, we’ll finally start to see the big picture take shape.
