Yahoo- Justin Rose Wins Gold Medal Over Henrik Stenson Justin Rose held off Henrik Stenson to win the gold medal in golf’s return to the Olympics.Zach Johnson is not one of those pros whose opinion of the Olympics was transformed by the spectacle of watching the event unfold in real time. In fact, he said Monday that he didn’t even give Olympic golf a chance to win him over — he refused to watch it at all. “I didn’t watch golf. I’d rather watch the sports that should be in the Olympics,” he said. “I’d rather watch the athletes who train for four years for that one week. I’d rather watch swimming and diving, track and field — the athletes that are relevant for one week. All of our (golf) athletes are relevant 24-7, 365. I just don’t see the need for golf to be in the Olympics.” “To mess with the four tournaments that matter most (the majors) because you’re at the Olympics,” he said. “I’ve got a strong, strong disdain for that.”

Zach Johnson off the top rope! A strong, strong disdain! Watch your mouth, Zachary! It’s honestly weird to hear Zach say things like that. He’s usually super reserved and NEVER EVER says anything remotely controversial. I can’t recall any other time where ZJ has taken one side of an issue over another. He’s very well versed in athlete speak which is to say he always says nothing. And sure, Rory blazed the trail by saying almost the exact same quote a month ago but still. Rory says controversial things all the time. He speaks his mind 247/365. Which almost makes Zach’s quote more powerful since he never says shit like this. I’m with Zach and Rory. Golf in the Olympics was cool but it wasn’t that cool. It wasn’t appointment television. Zach also makes a good point about golf being relevant all year long every year. Give the Olympic sports that are only relevant during that small window the stage. And oh yeah, golf already has something better that happens every two years so golf in the Olympics is pointless.
