Golf.com- Rory McIlroy will be the center of attention at this week’s Irish Open for a long list of reasons, not the least of which will be his flashy, limited edition shoes. The Rory Foundation has teamed up with Nike and the Cancer Fund for Children in Northern Ireland to hold a shoe design contest for kids whose lives have been affected by cancer. Four Nike Lunar Control 3 designs have been chosen as winners, and McIlroy will wear a different pair during each round of the Irish Open at Royal County Down. The contest was held to raise both funds and awareness for childhood cancer. Each pair was designed using NIKEiD and are available for purchase on Nike.com. A portion of the proceeds benefit The Rory Foundation. “The shoes are really unique with some crazy designs,” said McIlroy. “The Irish Open is going to be a very special event for golf and my foundation and I am excited to compete in them this week.”

I saw this story floating around the interwebs and wanted to share it.  Rory had a shoe design contest with kids in Northern Ireland who have been impacted by cancer and then winners were picked.  he’ll wear the shoes at the Irish Open.  Not gonna lie, some of those shoe designs are pretty fly.  Way too flashy for me but that’s because I suck at any and all things fashion but Rory will look cool as shit wearing them.  Rory gonna Rory.  Easily one of my favorite athletes right now.  Mostly because he seems like a genuinely good dude.  From his interviews, which are refreshingly honest and casual, to the way he handles himself off the course with things like this shoe design contest.  It also helps that he’s won a bunch of majors and tournaments over the last couple of years but whatever.  It’s always good for any sport to have a guy who is playing as well as Rory but it’s even better when that guy is fun to root for.  Rory fits into both of those categories.
