Does This Look Like The Face Of A Guy Who Got Pulled Over For An OWI Because He Drove His Car Onto Train Tracks And Then Claimed His GPS Took Him There?

Iowa Press-Citizen- Police say a Coralville man claimed he was following GPS directions when he turned his car onto railroad tracks, getting stuck in the process. Iowa City Police were dispatched at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday to the 700 block of S. Gilbert St. for a report of a vehicle stuck on the nearby railroad tracks, according to an Iowa City Police complaint. The vehicle, driven by 32-year-old William J. Mikkelson, was found stuck in the snow on the railroad tracks more than a block west of Gilbert Street at 300 Lafayette St., according to police. Mikkelson told police he drove onto the tracks because he was following directions provided by his GPS. Police say Mikkelson was visibly intoxicated, presented poor motor skills and provided a Datamaster blood alcohol content of .150. Mikkelson has been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor.

Hate when that happens.  Everybody’s been in this situation at least once.  One second you’re drunkenly driving down a perfectly fine road and trying to keep the car from swerving into oncoming traffic.  You know you’ve had too much booze to be driving but in the wise words of Peter Griffin, “Come on, you got to get your car home.”  You’ve gotta work in the morning and if you wake up your roommate at 6am to take you to your car again there’s a good chance he’ll plunge a butter knife into your jugular and you’ll bleed out in the kitchen.  So that’s no good.  Driving is a must.  Everything’s going fine until that blasted robotic voice tells you to hang a right onto the train tracks.  It seems like an odd choice but being the person who doesn’t like to break the rules (ya know, other than the whole driving drunk thing) you spin the steering wheel and find yourself on the tracks.  Maybe it’s a shortcut.  Maybe you’ll get home in time to watch a few Sham Wow commercials before passing out hard.  Too bad it’s not a shortcut.  Your car gets stuck and before long you see the blue and whites in your rearview.  Betrayed by technology yet again.  Oh well.  The police will understand.

PS- I can’t get a read on this William Mikkelson fella.  He’s either unlucky and just happened to get caught this once or he’s a serial killer with bodies piled up in his basement.  Hard to tell.
