BBC- A 14-year-old boy was arrested by police in Texas after a homemade clock he wanted to show his school teachers was mistaken for a bomb. Ahmed Mohamed told US media that he had made a clock at home and brought it into MacArthur High School in Irving to show his engineering teacher. Another teacher saw it and, concerned it looked like a bomb, alerted school authorities who called the police. His father fears the incident happened because of his son’s Muslim background. The Council on American-Islamic Relations says it is investigating the incident. There was a strong reaction to the story on social media.  Ahmed Mohamed told the Dallas Morning News that he loved engineering and wanted to show his teachers what he could do. He said his engineering teacher had congratulated him but advised him “not to show any other teachers”. The teenager said another teacher became aware of it when the device beeped during the lesson. “She was like – it looks like a bomb,” he said.

A few things going on here.  The image of that Muslim kid harmlessly bringing a homemade clock to school and the teachers screaming bloody murder that it’s a bomb is hilarious.  Probably not hilarious to those involved, but hilarious from afar.  Sounds like he was really proud of it, brought it to school for show-and-tell in engineering class and next thing he knows he’s in handcuffs down at the police station. White teachers falling outta their desk chairs to see who can call the cops on Mohamed first. HE’S GOT A BOMB!  All the while the kid is just standing there in his NASA shirt talking about the minute hand.  Texas gonna Texas. You think a brown-skinned kid can walk into a Texas middle school with a clock he built and leave without being in handcuffs?  Not a goddamn chance.  Not in this country sir.  How dare this kid try and use his skills and talents in a cool way and want to show it off to his teacher and classmates?  Blasphemy, really. And I’m not saying it’s partially the kid’s fault for not thinking it through but it’s partially the kid’s fault for not thinking it through. 14-year-olds should know that people are assholes.

This scene is all I could picture when I envisioned the parents of this kid going down the police station to ask the cops what was going and why they arrested their son
