Matt Williams Just Had a Bizarre Press Conference Where He Lied Through His Teeth The Entire Time
Matt fucking Williams! So big, so tough! Bryce was never going to play today. Had a scheduled day off because the Nats have a make-up game vs the Reds today. But Matt Williams wanted to show that he’s a big bad manager and benched him for being choked by Papelbon. Pretty incredible stuff.

The manager hasn’t talked to his closer? How? The guy just choked out Bryce and was suspended for the year with 7 games left and Matt Williams hasn’t spoken to him?

Now I will say this: I get it, he yelled “let’s fucking go” at a psychopath. So he’s not absolved of all blame. But in the heat of the moment, when fucking Papelbon is yelling at you, what are you going to do? Here’s the best summary of the Harper/Papelbon dynamic I read today:

Nobody felt like telling the manager the closer just choked the MVP? Pretty amazing stuff. So then Pap goes out and pitches the 9th. Why did he go out? First Matt says “because he’s our closer”, but then changes the story that he wouldn’t have sent him out had he known the extent of the fight.
Good fucking times. Wouldn’t be a season of DC sports if it didn’t end in drama best suited for a reality show. Let’s think about all 4 sports over the last year- Paul Pierce calling the shot and then missing while John Wall was trying to play with a hand broken in 10 places, the Caps being a minute from the ECF while up 3-1 in the series and then losing 3 straight, the Redskins being the Redskins, and now this. It’s actually impressive. Glad you are all along for the ride.
