I Don't Understand How Two People Have Died In The Last Week Driving The Wrong Way on the Highway

crash

Post - A man was killed early Sunday in a head-on collision with a truck after he began driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 in Prince George’s County, authorities said. The wrong-way collision on the interstate was the second of its kind on one of the Washington area’s major highways in recent days. The earlier incident happened about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when a 25-year-old woman was killed in Montgomery County in a collision that occurred while she was driving against traffic on Interstate 270. That crash occurred in the Gaithersburg area, near Interstate 370, the state police said. No explanations for either incident of wrong-way driving were available immediately. The report said that on average about 350 people each year were killed throughout the nation in wrong-way freeway crashes. According to the report, studies showed that most wrong-way drivers turn around before any collision occurs. In Sunday’s incident, Maryland state police said Christian Allen Knight, 22, of Olney was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-95 near the Intercounty Connector about 3 a.m, when his car struck a tractor-trailer.

These stories always baffle me because I can admit that I’m kind of on the shitty side when it comes to driving. Like, not woman-bad, but if I was in the driving lineup, I’d be in the 8 hole. Kinda just a utility player who drives when everyone else needs a little rest. Every once in a while I’ll pull out a big game, and I’ll think, “hey, maybe I have what it takes!”, but then I’ll try to change the song on the ipod and nearly flip into a ditch. So when I see stories like this, I am reminded that even though I’m a utility player, at least I made the big leagues. These people are driving the wrong way on major highways, and that is something I cannot even comprehend. I’m trying to logistically put it together in my mind how you can not only get on the exit to get onto the highway, but then begin driving against traffic. I’m not going to be as blunt to say the 350 people who do this every year deserve to die, but maybe for at about 300 of them, this world just isn’t the place for them.
