The Two Teams From Yesterday's Northwest Indiana High School Basketball Brawl Just Got The Rest Of Their Season Cancelled

(Source) The Indiana High School Athletic Association has ended the seasons of the Hammond and Griffith boys basketball teams after a fight in the first quarter of a game Saturday. Administrators for both schools were in Indianapolis on Tuesday to discuss the fight with Indiana High School Athletic Association officials, who with police are investigating the melee between the teams. The following sanctions have been issued to the schools:

>> Both have been suspended from the state tournament, and Hammond and Griffith shall not receive any revenue from the sectional.

>> All remaining regular season games at all levels are canceled. For away games, both schools must pay a $500 forfeiture fee to each hosting school left on the schedule. Hammond had two road games remaining (Andrean, Gary Bowman), Griffith had three (Gary Roosevelt, Kankakee Valley, Portage).

>> The coaches from both schools must complete a Teaching and Modeling Behavior course, while players from both teams must complete sportsmanship courses.

>> Both schools’ boys teams are on probation for the entire 2015-16 school year.

>> The game is a double forfeit. Hammond is 12-5, but will forfeit its four remaining games. Griffith is 13-4 and had six games remaining.

I understand the point, you don’t want high school kids brawling like this and in order to prevent it from happening again you have to drop the hammer on them. But this still sort of sucks. Especially the fact that they’re making all levels cancel the remainder of their season, freshman and JV as well. I don’t know, maybe it’s because I have no kids but this just seems like overreaction. Suspend them from postseason play. Suspend any players that physically engaged with the opposition, you have the tape right there, but don’t suspend everyone for everything. Some of those kids were just standing around, trying to break the fight up. Also, not for nothing but that fight becomes a mess because parents and adults came running in. If you let the coaches and refs separate the teams I bet it ends up differently.
