My Take On The Bears Draft

pace_main_2_010815

The first Ryan Pace draft class is in the books and it’s time to take a look at what will hopefully be the foundation of a future Bears team. I’m not a huge offseason rah-rah guy like a lot of people who will claim that they “WON THE DRAFT” or “WE’RE SET AT THIS POSITION FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS”. I really want to be but I’m at the point where the whole battered wife syndrome has completely worn off. We stink and while picking up six new players does excite me, it doesn’t excite me enough to talk about how bright everything is because all of it’s mush until we see these players go at it these next couple years.

1st Round: WR Kevin White, West Virginia 6-3 215 pounds

I’ve went through many phases on this pick. First it was that I didn’t like it, then once they picked him I became indifferent, and now I’m finally in “wait until he catches a slant and takes it 80 yards for a TD and then you’ll love him mode”. Pace took best available the whole draft and Kevin White was without a doubt just that once the clock hit the seventh pick. At the end of the day you take what’s less of a risk and one of those DE’s who have the potential to be Shea McClellin 2.0 wasn’t worth it. Also the WVU coaches (who are stoolies) absolutely love the guy so how can I disagree with a bunch of stoolies? Welcome to the squad, KW.

2nd Round: DL Eddie Goldman, Florida State 6-4 336 pounds

What can you hate here? Anytime you can add a big to your defensive front you gotta be happy. A lot of people had Goldman going late in the first round so lets hope that the Bears got a little bit of a steal here. It’s going to be interesting to see what’s going to stick with Ego, Goldman, Ratliff, and McDonald all vying for a spot. The last I read was that Ratliff may be moving outside so that makes me like this move even more.

3rd Round: C Hroniss Grasu, Oregon 6-3 297 pounds

Hold on one second. Lets all take a moment here to a get a little laugh. Remember when our FO let our soon to be fired GM offer a 36 year old Garza another year? Good times. In all seriousness though this is a pick that should have been made a year ago. Even with the Will Montgomery signing, center is a position that needed to find youth fast and now we have it. Some people even like him to beat out Montgomery this season which would be great.

4th Round: RB Jeremy Langford, Michigan State 6-0 208 pounds

Michigan v Michigan State

This was without a doubt the biggest head scratcher of all six picks. Langford himself even said that he was very surprised the Bears picked him. It’s hard to tell what to make of it because now it puts the Bears with 4 RB’s in the hole and two drafted within two years. To me personally it says that they must not see what Emery saw in Ka’deem Carey but who knows. All I know is that it will be an interesting battle to see who’s number 2 between Rodgers, Carey, and Langford.

5th Round: FS Adrian Amos, Penn State 6-0 218 pounds

usa-today-7569103.0

The man who ended up ended up being the player in the Brandon Marshall trade. It’s no secret that the Bears safeties have been nothing short of a steaming pile of shit, so they signed Antrel Rolle to step into the SS spot while having Amos, Mundy, and Vereen compete for FS. I know I literally just said that our safety play has been a steaming pile of shit (and it has) but I did think Mundy was OK and will only be better this year playing aside Rolle in Fangio’s scheme. Amos fits in by giving Munday some competition while pressing his role as the season goes on. Look for him to be a key special teams contributor as well.

6th Round: OT Tayo Fabuluje, TCU 6-6 353 pounds

Tayo

What a huge motherfucker this guy is. Six foot six, three hundred and fifty three pounds is just monstrous. It’s going to be fun to watch this guy in the preseason just based on his size alone but scouts like how his frame absolutely disintegrates opposing lineman in the run game. His footwork against edge rushers is still raw but the Bears are at a point right now where they can afford to give this guy time with Ola and Leno (hopefully) seeming to be the first guys to get a crack if things go awry.

That’s it for me. Talk to you again about these guys in three years.
