If You Could Change Any Existing Rule In Sports, What Would It Be?

So this question came up on KFC Radio and I loved it. So many different rules I absolutely despise. So let’s get to it. Here is the one rule I would change in each sport if I could. Not adding a wild crazy new rule, just changing or tweaking current rules. Leave the one you would pick or one I missed in the comments.

College Basketball

35 Second Shot clock – I can not stand the thirty five second shot clock in college. It’s absolutely brutal. A bunch of passes at the top of the key for 20 seconds then a team actually starts to attack. Makes game so slow especially when there is a mismatch in talent and one team is purposefully limiting possessions. Then you get to the end of a game and teams have to start fouling with 2 minutes left because there are only 4 possessions left. So what should be a basketball game turns into a Free Throw Contest. Don’t even need 24 seconds like NBA, I’d settle for 28 or 30, just anything but 35

Runner Up – Move the 3 point line back.

Runner Runner up – 5 fouls. Fuck 5 fouls. Remember when Joakim Noah and Greg Oden met in the finals and neither played for the entire first half? That fucking sucked. Give me unlimited fouls. If you get a 6th its an automatic extra free throw shot. 7th, 2. 8, 3 and so on and so forth.Just added a ton of strategy into the game.

College Football

Down without being touched – Nothing worse than your quarterback falling or a guy getting wide open and stumbling before the goal line. So dumb. He wasn’t tackled, he fell, unless someone touches him he should be able to get back up and finish the play. In no universe should Bryce Petty have been down at the 1 in this play. That’s a touchdown. He got in. Doesn’t matter if he slid in from the one, no one was near him, that’s a fucking touchdown.

NFL

Taunting – I need throat slashes. I need stare downs. I need guys getting in each other’s faces. The fact that you can’t look at another guy on the football field without getting a flag sucks.

Runner Up – I would actually love to see the clock stop after first downs in the 4th quarter. Sort of a hybrid from College Football. I love in CFB that a team can go down the field with 1 minute left.

NBA

Flopping – This might be the one we all can agree on the most. If you flop it should be a technical. Simple as that. Coaches get 1 flop challenge a game where they can have the ref review to see if actual contact was made otherwise a flop is a T. I honestly think it would completely eliminate flopping within a month.

NHL

Extend overtime by 10 minutes – Over 50% of OT games go to shootout. I hated ties so I’m not going to wholly bash shoot outs but I would like to see more OT games end in actual OT. 5 extra minutes would definitely take that percentage down. Keep the shoot out, extend the OT, boom, done.

Runner Up – Ban Pierre McGuirre from every hockey rink in North America.

Capture

MLB

Get rid of the DH – This will easily be the most contentious but I love the NL game. Where managers actually have to manage. When to pull a pitcher, when to pinch hit, double switches, all of it. There’s more strategy involved, more gamesmanship, and the fact that one league has two wildly different rules is absolutely ludicrous when you really think about. Could you imagine the NFC playing with 12 men on the field? How bizarre would that be? Same thing here. Just make it all equal.

Leave your rules in the comments.
