Boom. Thing of beauty (legit might be more valuable than my Cubs season tickets). Opening night tonight at the All State and I’ll be totally honest with you guys, I’m kind of excited. Like this whole thing started out as a joke a year ago when I went to my first Sky game but now I can’t tell if I’m joking or not anymore. I think I actually like the Sky. Weird turn of events. Just have no clue what is really going on anymore. Anyway, because I am a legit Skyrider (little term us season tix holders call each other) figure I might as well drop a little season preview. So let’s do that.

Chicago Sky 2014 Season Preview

In the late 80’s a young man by the name of Michael Jeffery Jordan was attempting to make professional basketball relevant again in Chicago, and that’s exactly what he did. Today, we look back at the Jordan era and think about how dominant he and his teams truly were. But it wasn’t always like that, there were the years the team struggled to the top of the mountain. The late 80’s playing against the Bay Boys Detroit Pistons who used physical big man play to bully the Bulls. What does this have to do with the Sky you ask? Well everything. Last season Elena Delle Donne won Rookie of the Year and helped the Sky finish with the best record in the Eastern Conference. What happened next was a rude awakening to playoff basketball. The Indiana Fever, with tougher, more experienced post players came into our house and pushed us around. They showed us how tough playoff basketball really is. If May – August is for girls, September and October is reserved exclusively for women. So what have the Sky done to get better. Here’s what.

1. Elena Delle Donne has gotten stronger, and tougher. See this picture.

That was basically Elena’s entire offseason. Pretty sure she lived at the gym. She knew she needed to add lower body strength for the playoff run and that’s exactly what she did. MVP season is not out of the question, remember i told you this.

2. Draft

Size, size, size. Have fun pushing around Markeisha “Sharkeisha” Gatling Indiana (lol, you can’t, she’s a monster).

6’5” 255 is the definition of beast mode.

3. I became a season ticket holder.

This is actually probably a bad thing but whatever. I’m going to do my best to bring some positive JuJu into the building.

4. Elena is now a leader too. Pokey has sort of thrown it out there in a public challenge, saying “I think more of a leadership role by Elena is what I’d expect.”  Time for EDD to step up, I know she can.

Question Marks?

1. Slyvia Fowles – our WNBA first team forward had a little knee surgery in the offseason. She’s out for a month, let’s hope she bounces back into form by July/August.

2. Swin Cash trade – little bit of a shocker when Swin Cash was traded last week basically out of the blue. Did a little digging with my league sources and found out that the Sky offered her a 1 year max deal and she refused. Good move by the Sky, no need to be handing out long term deals to 34 year olds.

3. Epiphanny Prince missed camp due to personal reasons. I expect her back soon and all to be good but something for you to keep an eye on, I know I will.

So there it is, I have high expectations. Climbing the Mountain. Anything less than an Eastern Conference Finals appearance and I’ll be pretty disappointed. That may be setting the expectations too high but I’m ok with that. This is a new era of Sky basketball, we demand deep playoff runs.
