This Week in Bulletin Board Fodder: Broncos Safety Says Edelman Can't Compare to Welker

NESNAdd another chip to Julian Edelman‘s shoulder. If the New England Patriots were looking for some bulletin board material, they got some from Denver Broncos safety Mike Adams. The defensive back had some slightly disparaging remarks about the Patriots receiver when asked to compare Edelman to Denver Broncos receiver Wes Welker. “I can’t compare the two because Wes is — he’s something special,” Adams said to Broncos reporters on Monday. “He can jive up the ball and then speed out and have you off balance. Edelman, he doesn’t do that. He’s a one-speed guy. He doesn’t have the same ability or the quickness that Wes has in the slot. I guess that is the main difference between them.”

I suppose you could argue that this is some pretty inflammatory talk out of Mike Adams.  That he’s totally disrespecting Julian Edelman.  And that Minitron and the whole Patriots team have a right to be pissed off at him shooting his mouth off like this before the week has even begun.  But on the other hand, you have to admit he has a point.  I mean, we’ve seen both guys and it’s pretty obvious by now that Edelman can’t jive the ball up and then speed out and have you off balance the way Welker can.  He’s just a one-speed guy.  He doesn’t have any of Wes’ ability or quickness in the slot.  I mean, just look at the production:

Edelman: 105 Receptions, 1056 Yards, 10.1 YPC

Welker: 73 Receptions, 778 Yards, 10.7 YPC

OK, well Edelman outperformed him.  But that’s not a fair comparison because he had more weapons around him.  And Welker was way more important to Denver, right?

Edelman: Had more receptions than the next two Patriots combined on a team that lost 88% of it’s receiving production from last year.

Welker: 3rd on Denver in receptions, 4th in yards, on a team that set the all time records for passing yards and points.

Maybe not.  But still, Adams can pop off because when the two teams met in November, he completely took Minitron out of the game and Welker ran all over the Pats:

Edelman: 9 Receptions, 110 Yards, 2 TDs, a win.

Welker: 4 Receptions, 31 Yards, 0 TDs, a loss.

Alright, so maybe it’s not all about who can jive and who has how many speeds.  Maybe it’s about hard work and Edelman being by far the most productive reliable weapon Brady had from the beginning of the season to now.  And single handedly carrying the receiving corps in such a way that the Pats were within a point of being the 2nd highest scoring team in the NFL.  Or maybe all this simply means that Mike Adams is a mouthy punk who’d never won jack squat in his life.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it now.  What would the reaction be if anyone on the Patriots shot his mouth off like this?  @JerryThornton1
