This "Stranger Things" Fan Theory That El Is Actually The Monster Is Really Good And Really Makes Me Sad

Dammit. I like this theory a lot but I also hate it so much. Eleven is probably my favorite character since Tim Riggins. I adore her. She’s badass and dangerous but also sweet and caring, she’s fantastic and Millie Bobby Brown portrays her magnificently. But now you’re telling me that if I root for her then I’m rooting for the monster? You’re telling me that it’s impossible for this show to have a happy ending? Eleven can never succeed in saving the town from the monster and also have a normal life, because she is the monster? That sucks. It’s an awesome storyline, but it sucks that I know in order for El to accomplish her quest she’ll have to sacrifice herself.

Seeing it drawn out like that, the whole thing makes perfect sense. Despite how powerful El is, she knew she could never get out of the Hawkins Lab so she created a blood-thirsty monster to do her dirty work for her. She created a monster that happens to be telekinetic just like she is. I knew a Demagorgan was a creature but I never knew it connected to both El and the monster to such an extent. I didn’t know that its heads, one good and one evil, were constantly at war with each other. The XMen issue? That’s as big a wink as you can possibly get from the writers. I’m not a nerd so I’d never heard of that but “Oh look, the boys got this really famous comic book where, you guessed it, another telekinetic person has two separate embodiments battle with each other. What a coincidence!” is pretty clear. The hand thing I actually did notice, but never thought much of it until I learned all this other information.

I hadn’t considered this theory at all, because I’m an idiot, but now that I’ve heard it, it is tough to deny. It’s absolutely awesome writing, but it’s devastating as a fan. I’m a sucker for happy endings so I always dreamed that when the series finally ended Eleven would move in with Mike’s family and they’d go to school dances and eat Egggos together and she’d live a normal life, but after seeing this I’m ready to accept that that’s probably never going to happen. Fuck.
