The Patriots Landing David Harris Makes the Best Off-season in History Even Better. Much, Much Better

.

Just so I don’t get accused of suddenly liking David Harris only because he’s with the Patriots now, here’s what I said about Harris the day the Jets cut him:

David Harris is the anti-Revis Island. A guy I’ve liked since I had a draftcrush on him coming out of Michigan in 2007. The Jets stole him in the second round and he’s done nothing but produce. He plays every down. Has missed one game since 2008, and that was last year when he was playing through a hamstring injury. And he still led the team with 95 tackles. He’s made all the calls in some complex schemes like Eric Mangini’s shifting fronts and Rex Ryan’s multiple-angle blitz packages. And he’s been a glue guy, a quiet leader who doesn’t self-promote or chase endorsement money, even in the middle of some chaotic locker rooms.

And now he’s a Patriot. A guy who can not only be a part of the linebacker mix that includes Dont’a Hightower, Elandon Roberts, Kyle Van Noy and Shea McClellin – which in an of itself would be a great addition – but play every down alongside Hightower.

This was already the best free agency period in Patriots history. And to hear ESPN tell it, the best by any Super Bowl champion of the salary cap era. But even a month after the last of the good free agents came off the market, one as good as any of them gets cut and the Pats land him. They’ve become so stacked, they’ve formed a gravitational field that just draws great talents looking for a ring. And Harris, who as always been a Belichick Guy to the core and probably the Jet The Hooded One admired most, is a perfect fit.

The Social Darwinism continues, even deep into June. The strong survive. The rich keep getting richer. And this latest addition just broke my brain. And my zipper. Welcome to New England, David Harris. Unlike in New York, you’re already appreciated here.
