The Brady Jersey Thief is Walking Away with No Charges Against Him

Mauricio Ortega

PFTThe fascinating, multi-layered, multinational case of the Tom Brady jersey thievery raises plenty of questions. Here’s one that has been largely glossed over: Will Martin Mauricio Ortega face criminal responsibility for his crimes?

Apparently, he won’t.

Consider this passage from the Associated Press: “A Mexican government official confirmed that the warrant targeted Ortega and the search was at his home. Speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case, the official said an agreement was reached for an unspecified victim in the U.S. not to press charges in exchange for the jersey’s return.”

The “unspecified victim” presumably is Tom Brady.

Unbelievable. Just unfuckingbelievable. No more than 48 hours ago I wanted Trump to get us to DEFCON 1 and turn sand to glass in whatever country was giving sanctuary the Jersey Thief. And justifiably so. But the Mexican government cooperated. They ran a dragnet and caught our man. Justice was ours.

And now he’s just going to walk free. And why? Because Tom Brady is too nice a guy to want anyone to go to jail? Even the US federal tennis prison this guy would undoubtedly wind up in? Well there’s such a thing as being nice to a fault. Which is why the legal system doesn’t put it in the hands of victims to decide whether to prosecute. It’s The People vs. Martin Mauricio Ortega Camberos, not Tom Brady vs. Because when you commit a crime it’s against all of us. And we can’t leave punishing habitual criminal offenders in the hands of great human beings who read The Four Agreements and take the dreaded high road when Roger Goodell is standing right next to them. Otherwise Swiper here will just keep swiping.

And in case you’re tempted to give no shits about a stolen jersey because it’s just a jersey, how would you feel if this sticky fingered little bastard stole a bag of cash with 500 grand in it? Plus the dollar value of Von Miller’s helmet and cleats. And Brady’s Super Bowl XLIX shirt. And God knows what else. Let’s say in total he stole a million bucks worth of stuff right out from under NFL Security’s nose? Well would we say it’s no big deal if it was $1 million in paintings or historic artifacts or cars he was smuggling out of the country?

Thieves who get caught need to get punished. I’m sure Brady just wants his stuff back so he can auction it off to benefit Best Buddies or something. And God knows the NFL wants this thing over because it makes them look like Paul Blart. That doesn’t mean you let a career thief get off scot-free. But as the old Dylan line goes, steal a little and they throw you in jail. Steal a lot and they make you a king.
