Patriots Cut Kyle Love Because He's Got Diabetes

Foxboro – The Patriots released Kyle Love yesterday, about two weeks after the hulking defensive tackle was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Agents Sean Stellato and Richard Kopelman of Klass Sports told the Herald they were informed the transaction was purely based on medical information. However, Stellato and Kopelman believe Love will be healthy enough to play in time for training camp this summer. Love was alarmed by a sudden loss of 20 pounds earlier this offseason, and tests eventually uncovered the diabetes, which does run in his family… “I was assured this was pure and simple a medical decision,” Kopelman said. “I asked, ‘Was there something else at play here?’ And I was told no, it’s 100 percent a medical decision, and that’s all there is to it.”

I love how everyone’s saying this is cruel and it just goes to show how heartless Bill Belichick is.  (Just wait til the next Ron Borges column.  Ol’ Ctrl+C  will make this sound like Love was a disabled veteran and Belichick stole his wheelchair.)  But what else is a coach supposed to do?  He’s there to win Super Bowls, not run a nursing home.  The NFL is a dog-eat-dog world and he’s wearing Milk Bone underpants.  He’s got a defense to assemble, and he has neither the time nor the luxury of worrying about whether Kyle Love has some hereditary disease or whatever.  Call that heartless if you want, but he’s in the results business.  I used to work at my day job with this meathead who had Diabetes and ir was a complete pain in the ass.  He was constantly bagging work so he could go check his blood glucose, take his insulin, eat Cheerios, take breaks… while I got stuck doing all the work.  And still you never know with these diabetics.  They’re ticking time bombs that can go off and start seizing up at any moment.  Are the Pats supposed to burn a timeout in the middle of a game because Love is getting his flop on in the huddle?  Fuck that.  I mean sure, it’s too bad for Love.  He worked hard and was getting plenty of quality reps last year.  He doesn’t deserve this. But nice guy? I don’t give a shit. Good father? Fuck you! Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here – close!  Unfortunately for him there are plenty of 300 lb undrafted defensive linemen out there who don’t have Type 2 Diabetes.  And he’s on a team that cares a lot more about losing championships than it does about him losing his foot.  You can call it unfair, don’t blame the Patriots.  Blame life.  @JerryThornton
