Major League Baseball Is Disgustingly Obsessed With This Tim Tebow Tryout

That’s the @MLB Twitter right now. Over the last six hours, roughly, they have either tweeted or retweeted about Tim Tebow’s tryout 12 times. Twelve. Twelve tweets about a washed-up, god-fearing, hasn’t-played-baseball-since-high-school 29 year old. Do you want to know how many times the MLB official account has tweeted about Mike Trout, one of the game’s youngest superstars, all season? Eleven times. Since the 2016 season started they’ve tweeted about Mike fucking Trout eleven times, only one of them being a clip of him actually playing baseball, yet on August 30th all they can talk about is Tim Tebow.

That’s INSANE. I’ve written about how Mike Trout is the most poorly marketed athlete in sports, but this is utterly preposterous. You wonder why people think that baseball is dying? Curious why kids aren’t as interested in the sport as they used to be? Look no further than today. Major League Baseball takes more interest in promoting sideshows than they do in promoting their own stars and the actual game. They’d rather pimp the circus tryout of a guy who was a pretty good high school player over a decade ago than pimp guys like Trout, Haper, Betts, etc. It’s insanity. Tim Tebow is out here running sprints and catching fungos and the powers that be at league headquarters decided that’s more deserving of attention than all that their young stars, and there are a LOT of them right now, are doing on a nightly basis.

I know Tim Tebow is a household name and I know he’ll get your retweet stats up, but maybe look to promote from within the company? Don’t go out there and become obsessed with marketing a guy who’s never going to set foot on a big league diamond. That’s lazy and is absolutely never going to grow the game. Eleven Mike Trout mentions in a season (almost all about his sneakers or place in All Star voting), twelve Tim Tebow mentions/retweets in an afternoon. Incredible that a professional sports league can be this bad, or this oblivious, about how to use social media for marketing purposes.

Update: Apparently you have to search “Mike Trout” to get all Trout mentions? I blame Twitter for that, because I don’t take blame for stuff. The MLB has mentioned Trout more than I thought. My points that Trout is horribly marketed and the MLB stinks at social media stand.
