Lunenburg High School Cancels Thanksgiving Game After JV Player Has Racial Slur Written on His House

LUNENBURG, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) Lunenburg school officials have announced the cancellation of the rest of the football season following a reported racist graffiti incident. At a press conference Monday, Lunenburg’s superintendent Loxi Jo Calmes announced that the high school would forfeit the remainder of its games this season. Last Friday, the school’s football game against Oakmont Regional High School was postponed after racist graffiti was found spray-painted on a player’s home. “Knights don’t need n******,” the graffiti read. Isaac Phillips, the apparent target of the graffiti, is one-quarter black. His father, Anthony Phillips, is half black, and his mother, Brazier, is white.

In a statement to the Fitchburg Sentinel & Enterprise, Calmes said:

“It was concerning enough to the coaches and administrators that we decided that there would not be a game…What we’ve been told is a bit unsettling and we’re going to make sure that things are looked into.” “When it comes to picking on kids or whatever it is, when it goes to another level, when property starts being damaged, someone should immediately try to do whatever they can to stop whatever’s going on,” Anthony Phillips said. So far, no one on the team had come forward with information or an admission of who wrote the graffiti. Isaac Phillips said he hadn’t been having trouble with anyone until recently, when his bike tires were slashed and cleats were taken from his locker and water poured into them.

So this story has been all over the news the last couple days. Some absolute lowlife scumbag(s) writing the N word on a JV football player’s house from Lunenburg. Now the superintendent has canceled their Thanksgiving Day game. Naturally lots of people emailed me saying this was the pussification of America. That it’s not fair to punish everybody else based on the actions of 1 asshole or a couple scumbags. Guess what? I agree with the school’s decision here. Shocker right?

It’s just that I’ve been following this story from the beginning and there doesn’t seem to be any doubt this was done by players on the team. Worse yet the coaches haven’t said a peep about it or even contacted this kid to show support. It almost seems like they are protecting their own. That’s no bueno.  There isn’t a doubt in my mind they know who did it or people on the team know who did it.  You can’t just retrench and say nothing. That makes everybody culpable in my mind. Football is a team game. You win as a team you lose as a team. This isn’t something you sweep under the rug or refuse to talk about. The way the Lunenburg coaches have handled this is a disgrace and they deserve to be fired and forfeit the remainder of the season. You want to play? Show some accountability. Have whoever did it come forward to take his punishment like a man.
