Hernandez Jerseys Are Selling Like Crazy On eBay
(CNNMoney) – Owners of Aaron Hernandez football jerseys have taken to eBay to rid themselves of his jersey — and make a hefty profit. Official Hernandez jerseys, which went for $100 online, are now selling for a premium, and bids are reaching twice the original value. Hernandez was an NFL player for the New England Patriots until last week, when police charged him with first-degree murder. Prosecutors say he had a falling out with a friend at a night club in mid-June, then orchestrated his execution-style killing two days later. Upon hearing about Hernandez’s arrest on Wednesday, Ben Kent in Virginia Beach decided he couldn’t keep the jersey around the house. It would set the wrong example for his two kids. So, he put his used red jersey up for auction. “I figured I’d try to dump it. Where can I wear this thing now? I’d receive a lot of backlash,” he told CNNMoney. Kent started the bid at $50 and didn’t even expect it to sell at that price. But by Monday morning, the item had received more than 2,000 views, and 37 bids had pushed the price up to $227.50. The bidding is due to end at 5:08 pm ET. Brett Iannazzo, a 16-year-old from Methuen, put his signed Hernandez Super Bowl jersey on eBay because he felt it was no longer worthy to be in his house, where the living room is painted red, silver, and blue and a framed Tom Brady jersey hangs on the wall.
“I loved Hernandez. I had his rookie jersey. Whenever I got a double in baseball, I’d do his end zone dance; take out the briefcase and make it rain,” he said. “Now, I’m done with that. I’m done with him.” With a couple of days to go before the end of the auction, Iannazzo’s $100 jersey is already up to $142.50 on eBay. “Maybe they’re people who collect strange items. I know someone who bought a Nazi Germany jacket. Why would anyone buy something like that?”
This isn’t surprising to me at all. Of course people are paying big bucks for a product that is no longer manufactured. I vaguely remember supply and demand and this is exactly how it works. To be honest I probably wouldn’t have even bothered blogging it if it wasn’t for Brett Iannazzo’s quote at the end there. You used to make it rain when you hit a double bro? Seriously? That’s way more offensive than someone buying an Aaron Hernandez jersey. It was a fucking touchdown dance, not a 12 yard reception dance. If I was on the mound and you took out a fake fucking briefcase and made it rain after hitting a little gapper I’d have no choice but to throw at your earhole during every at bat for the rest of the day.
PS – Hernandez is a bad dude but comparing his jersey to a Nazi Germany jacket may be a tad over the top.
