Follow A Black Guy On A Journey As He Experiences Hockey For The First Time

Last night’s game 7 was incredible, it was hockey at it’s absolute finest. Rivaling cities playing at a great pace of play with big hits, hammer shots, timely and remarkable saves, double posts, Doc Emrick on the call, everything was like the stars had aligned perfectly. But somehow one of the most enjoyable hockey games of the season wasn’t the story of the evening for me. No, it was following Tony X, a black man who just last night discovered hockey.

In a sense, I almost felt like a parent reading Tony’s tweets — like I felt a deep pride reading them. I imagine it’s what my dad felt the first time he watched a hockey game or Butch Cassidy with me, seeing someone enjoy something as much you do is always great. Especially when it’s a black guy, because that makes it cool by association. We, as hockey fans, had pretty much only had Cuba Gooding Jr to point at when asked if black people like hockey but last night Tony jumped in the corner too.

The best part of it all was I’ve been in Tony’s shoes countless times when I dabble in black culture. Be it simply reading black twitter or listening to a new rap album, I’ve been here. At times it’s being like a baby giraffe, learning to walk, but it’s an excellent rollercoaster. Strap in, let’s ride.

I was pretty late on Future but this was essentially my reaction listening to my first song. I don’t know what this is, I’ve never had the pleasure before, but I know my heart is beating out of my chest and I want to break shit. Playoff hockey and Future, both are LIT.

Instead of Google I always need Urban Dictionary open.

Hockey and Mighty Ducks are very similar. It’s as realistic as a film gets. When talking about “black” things I just say that I’ve listened to Reasonable Doubt and everyone is like “whoa watch out, we got an expert.” That’s what happens when you tell a hockey fan you’ve seen Mighty Ducks.

Tony, we’re happy to have you, but please keep this secret. Hockey is all we have left. It’s the last sport for the middlesized white boy (shoutout to Youngblood). Please don’t tell the black community about hockey so they decide to start kicking our ass at it.

That’s soccer, but close.

My first time watching Steph Curry last year or Messi at the World Cup. I don’t know who the fuck this guy is but he can do things everyone else clearly cannot.

The emojis are such a great addition to hockey twitter. Never see enough of those. Holy shit it hit off both posts! Crying emojis! MJ meme! Mr. Krab whirl face! Do it all!

If you want bread you go to the bakery, you want cash you go to the bank, you want goals you go to the net. He’s not wrong.

“The goalie just said fuck it and left?” is as funny as tweets get.

Whoa easy Tony, you can’t start disparaging our other sport just because you like hockey. TED talks, baseball, and hockey: that’s what white people love. If you’re onboard with one you gotta be onboard with all of it.

That’s the story of Tony discovering hockey. Follow him for the rest of the playoffs. I’m sure it’s going to be fantastic.
