Brady Weighs In On Sherman On EEI This Morning And Basically Says He Hates His Guts
(NESN) — Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has a history with Sherman that dates back to last season. Sherman went up to Brady to talk trash after the Seahawks beat the Patriots 24-23 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Sherman later tweeted a picture of the confrontation with the words “U MAD.” Brady was asked about Sherman’s postgame comments during the quarterback’s weekly appearance on Dennis & Callahan on Monday. “I don’t know him at all. I’ve watched him play. He’s that kind of guy,” Brady said. “So, you know. I approach the game — and I have respect for my opponents. That’s the way our team always plays. We win with graciousness, and when we lose, we could do better. Some teams don’t always do that, or that’s not their program. The only way to counter that is to beat them. When you don’t win, it’s hard not to say — you just gotta shut your mouth and listen to it. Maybe when you get an opportunity down the road, maybe that’s a source of motivation. But they got a good team, they played well all year. They played well at home. And that’s why they advanced, too.”
Brady obviously said all the right things here and tiptoed around what he really meant. But as far as Patriots sound bytes go, this is saying he fucking hates Richard Sherman. And I couldn’t agree with him more. However, I don’t hate Richard Sherman for the reasons most people do today. I don’t hate him because he’s loud or cocky or anything like that. That’s all totally fine by me. I don’t hate him because he didn’t with win with “class” or “dignity,” which are bullshit words in this brutal sport anyway. But I can’t stand him because he’s fake. I can’t stand him because that post-game interview was a calculated move. He wanted everyone to talk about him so he went off purposely. He knew EXACTLY what he was doing and wanted everyone to be Googling “Richard Sherman interview” and tweeting about it this morning.
He’s undoubtedly a great player, probably the best cornerback in the league, but it wasn’t enough for him to let his play speak for itself. He needed all the headlines. You can clearly see from 5 minutes after that interview, when he’s talking to Bradshaw on the podium, that he’s a normal guy. So why let “Richard Sherman screams at Erin Andrews” become the narrative rather than “Richard Sherman makes an incredible play to send his team to the Super Bowl”? That’s what I hate. That he purposely took all the headlines instead of letting everyone talk about what a great game that was and what a great play he made to finish it off. Making victories about yourself, instead of the team, will annoy me every time.
