WEEIThe Red Sox bullpen took yet another hit Friday. Prior to the Red Sox’ series-opener against the Yankees, Sox manager John Farrell said that Andrew Bailey’s right shoulder has been diagnosed with having had damage to both the labrum and capsule. It was a determination confirmed in a second opinion performed by Dr. David Altchek Tuesday. While Farrell noted that Bailey hasn’t yet decided if the pitcher will choose surgery, there is a strong possibility that the reliever will need a procedure performed on his shoulder. The likelihood, regardless of the decision, is that Bailey will be out for the remainder of the season.

Any other season and I’d worry right now. Last year I would be ready to turn the key to Defcon 5. Not just because of Bailey, but also due to Bucholz’ injury and Lester’s lackluster performance after a hot start. But for some reason, not worried. This Sox team just has that feel to them this year. They always appear to pull it off. Whether that be a game winning hit or plugging in a closer, I’m confident they’ll get the job done. Some teams have a winning aura and this group has it in spades.

PS – Paying Papelbon looks smarter every day. 4 closers in 2 years (Bard, Jenks, Bailey, Hanrihan) and none on the active big league roster. Bad look.
