And the Pussification of America Continues: Princeton Bans Burning John Harvard In Effigy At Pep Rally Because It Hurts People's Feelings

Barstool,

Could one of you guys address this story: Basically, whenever Princeton’s football team beats Harvard and Yale in the same year there’s a bonfire on campus to celebrate. One of the traditions involved is that the football captains get to light the bonfire and burn a John Harvard effigy and stuffed Yale bulldog. This year, some kids who most likely have never been to a Princeton football game because they are too busy studying complained about it so they’re going to burn Harvard and Yale logos instead. Also, other varsity athletes will be involved with lighting the bonfire instead of just the football captains, which, while I have less of a problem with that, is still changing something that doesn’t need to be changed. All of this went down without the football players being included in the decision. I don’t play football here but I have a few friends on the team and as a varsity athlete at this school I know how hard they’ve worked to pull this off (Ivy League champs this year after going 1-9, 1-9, and 5-5 the last three years). Here’s a link to a petition to try to change it back to what it was.

I know that it’s easy to rip on Princeton and the Ivy League (I do it a lot myself), but this is a classic pussification of America story ruining a great college football tradition. If one of you guys could post a blog getting the story out there that would be awesome.

Viva La Stool,

Article from Daily Princeton

In response to student concerns regarding the burning of a human figure, fuel for Sunday’s bonfire will not include an effigy of John Harvard and likely will not include a Yale bulldog. The bonfire celebrating the University football team’s victories over both Harvard and Yale will take place Sunday evening at 7 p.m. on Cannon Green. “We have yet to figure out what will replace [the figures], but it will not be anything that represents a human,” USG social chair Carla Javier ’15 said. Javier is a senior writer for The Daily Princetonian. The decision was made after various students expressed their distaste for the burning of a human-like figure. Although at this time it is not clear what will be placed on the bonfire instead, there are proposals to burn a large “Y” and “H” instead, Javier said. In previous years, only the football team captains have participated in lighting the pyre. This year, other members of the athletics program will pass the torch around the ring surrounding the bonfire before the fire is ultimately lit by football team captains Phillip Bhaya ’14 and Caraun Reid ’14.

This story is so ridiculous that I can’t even begin to discuss it. Like what type of absolute lunatic would complain about this?   I almost need to see the person who took offense to this to believe it.  And what type of lunatic administrators would actually accommodate this request? It’s a fucking stick figure! Grow up. But honestly I guess it shouldn’t be that surprising. Nothing school administrators do surprises me nowadays. Some little Ivy League dork gets mad that a stick figure is getting thrown into a bonfire let’s change the way we’ve been doing things for the past 100 years. Yeah that makes sense.

PS – Starting a change.org petition to protest a Pussification of America story is so Ivy League it hurts.

Double PS – How big of a joke is Princeton by the way? Harvard and Yale are rivals. The Big Game, blah, blah, blah. Holding pep rallys when you beat both Harvard and Yale is something schools do who are jealous of Harvard and Yale.  Neither of them consider you to be their main rivals so you shouldn’t give them the satisfaction of holding pep rallys when you beat them. It’s like Michigan State thinking they are Michigan’s rival. No you’re not. You’re just that school where instate dummies go.
