Now 6 Foot 5, 315 Pound Iowa Lineman Brandon Scherff Slingin' The Football Around In High School As Quarterback Is Majestic

Black Heart Gold Pants-A fun part of the Brandon Scherff story (is it a myth yet at this point?) is the fact that the giant 6-5, 315 lb. mountain of a man that has become one of the hottest left tackle prospects in America was a high school quarterback.  But for the most part we were just left to imagine what that was like.  Imagine no longer.  Our friends at MaxPreps have posted actual video highlights of Scherff playing QB. As a passer, Scherff looks fine, but not particularly amazing.  As a short yardage option, though… dear god.  Granted, if Scherff is running the ball in a short yardage option, he’s by definition not blocking on that play*, which is decidedly not ideal.  But it’s still awfully fun to imagine the carnage that could ensue.

Love it.  I gotta admit, I’m a sucker for videos like this.  Throwback videos of a guy like Brandon Scherff who is currently 6 foot 5 and weighs 315 pounds back in the day slingin’ the rock around to receivers.  Everybody went to high school with the guy who the coaches said, “Fuck it, let’s just take the most talented guy on the field and put him at quarterback. I don’t care if he’s never played there before.”  Brandon Scehrff was that guy at his high school.  Ben Lamaak was the name of that guy at my high school in Cedar Rapids.  Lamaak coincidentally went on to be a starting lineman at Iowa State and had a cup of coffee with the Oakland Raiders.  He started as a tight end/defensive end but was so talented we put him at QB and he dominated.  As far as Scherff, he looked pretty damn good out there.  Pinpoint precision.  I’m not saying Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis should draw up a play where Brandon throws a pass but he totally should.  It’d be a nice little wrinkle in his NFL prospect video.  Make it happen, Greg.

Now, Brandon looks like this.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include this video.  The ultimate high school “Put him at QB and let his natural talents take over” was Allen Iverson.
