Oral Roberts Hoops Coach Fired After 2 Bad Seasons Where He Was Only Allowed To Recruit "Professed Christians" With No Tattoos

Tulsa World - Apparently, neither Wilson nor athletic director Mike Carter actually told Sutton about the firing. While watching his daughter play tennis, Sutton learned of his ouster from others who saw the news on social media.

During a period of 11 seasons (2001-02 through 2011-12), Sutton’s teams were 130-40 in Summit League play. In 2015-16, the Golden Eagles were 14-17 overall and 6-10 in the league. This season, they were 8-22 and 4-12. They didn’t qualify for participation in the conference tournament.

ORU’s 2016-17 season ended on Feb. 22 — 40 days before North Carolina defeated Gonzaga for the national title.
Two years ago, did the Sutton brothers — Scott and assistant coach Sean — suddenly become lazy or forget how to teach basketball principles? No. Their teams weren’t winning at typical levels because, apparently, they did as they were told.

After Wilson became the university president in June 2013, sources report, he presented to the basketball program a new guideline — that ORU would attempt to recruit only professed Christians.

Instead of recruiting any athlete who was a solid person and academically acceptable while outfitted with the ability to contend for Summit League championships, Scott Sutton did as he was told, sources say. Instead of signing athletes and hoping they might be inspired by the ORU culture, Sutton narrowed his focus to prospects who would testify that they already were Christian.

The results were undeniable. Top to bottom, the last two ORU rosters weren’t as talented as previous Sutton-coached rosters.

In times like this I’m reminded what the great modern thinker Lavar Ball had to say:  “you can’t win no championships with white guys.”  Sure he may have taken a ton of heat for that comment for stereotyping and reverse racism and all that, and he may have been disproven by people casually mentioning names like “Larry Bird” (people forget he was white), at the end of the day the facts are simple – just can’t win with too many white dudes.  And you CERTAINLY can’t win with white dudes + baby soft tattoo-less professed Christians.  Can’t do it.   The less ink, the more tallies in the L column.  The more Bible banging, the less Ws.    I mean it’s 2017.  You want to compete in D1 athletics you better have some bad to the bone tatted up motherfuckers.   You better have guys who may be casual God fans but care way more about their coach, teammates and cutting down nets in March than some big fairy tale dude in the sky.   That’s just cold hard reality.  No offense to the Man upstairs, but unless he can guard 7’4″ Europeans in the post or shoot 40% from 3 with a savage lion wearing a crown on his bicep, successful coaches got no room for him on the roster.
