SEC CountryEd Orgeron spoke at the Le Pavilion Petroleum Club in Lafayette on Monday night, part of the LSU spring speaking tour. And one topic that the Tigers’ head coach discussed, according to Glenn Guilbeau of the USA Today Network, was defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin, a 5-star recruit entering his first season with LSU.

Previously, Shelvin weighed 383 pounds. But according to Orgeron, a new diet has helped Shelvin shed 60 pounds to get into better playing shape.

“He is a very explosive young man,” Orgeron said, per Guilbeau. “I expect him to help us out this year. One thing I’m proud of Tyler is he got all the way up to 383. And I told his grandma, ‘Start feeding him gumbo with no rice.’ He called and said, ‘Coach, you killing me. I need more rice.’ But he got down to 325 pounds. I’m most proud of Tyler for that, and I think he’s going to be an excellent player for us.”

Even got all the way up to 383 in the offseason, inching dangerously close to that vaunted 4 bills spot.  But fortunately for Shelvin and Shelvin’s heart, Coach Orgeron likes his players in a little better shape.  Little slimmer and a little less chance of dropping dead.

What’s the secret?

Gumbo with no rice.  Of course.

Doctors spend all that time and money on all those fancy degrees from med school to try and tell you how to live healthy.  Coach O tells your gram to feed you pot after pot of Louisiana Stew and just leave the starch on the side.   Boom, instant success.  Lean mean completely satiated football machine.

Coach O – the man, the myth, the legend.
