Parents wouldn’t let him play. They’d read all the literature on head injuries. Had to watch from the outskirts, perched atop his bicycle, as all his buddies strapped on their shoulder pads and helmets and learned how to tackle. Smashing against the dummies and the sleds. Lowering their shoulders into moving human bodies during live scrimmages. Gladiators on the gridiron. Comparing war wounds after practice, icing the bumps and bruises, symbols of the pain and glory.
Just had to take it all in and wait for the day that he too would get a chance to be one of the guys, to assert his manhood. To show everyone that he too was a man. To show himself.
