College Picks
The mysterious crying sound that you heard today on your way to work was the sound of the masses mourning the end of college football season and the end of us making you easy money this year. It’s hard to believe that yet another college football season is in the books, but it's true. And for the bookmakers the season couldn’t have ended quickly enough. The Stool has been simply destroying the bookmakers all season long and we’ll look to continue our momentum as we prepare for bowl season. While some handicappers may coast through championship week, we look to put an exclamation point on our season. To quote the white coach from Remember the Titans “Leave no doubt, Herman.”
Season Record 35-24
Last Week 2-2
Mortal Lock Record 7-4
Colorado at Texas -27.5
Is this really the Big 12 Championship game? What does this say about the Big 12 when there is a 4-TD spread in the championship game? It is embarrassing to say the least. Colorado is rounding into shape nicely for this one- losing their last two games including getting destroyed 30-3 against Nebraska last week. They were a 20-pt. favorite in that game! These teams already played earlier this season with Texas winning 42-17. I highly doubt it will be that close this time around. Colorado is playing their worst football of the year and Texas will be looking to rebound from a pitiful performance against Texas A&M. This game will be a massacre just like everybody expects it to be and will showcase why college football is so screwed up. Texas only had one tough game all year and that was against Ohio State early in the season in a game they were lucky to win. I could pick at least 4-teams from the SEC that would have run the table in the Big 12. I could pick at least 2-teams from the ACC, Big 10 and Pac-10 who could have done the same. What I’m trying to say is that Texas had arguably the easiest ride to the National Championship game of any team in the history of modern civilization. They may end up being the best team in the country but without a playoff system I refuse to recognize them as National Champs even if they do beat USC.
The Pick – Texas
West Virginia at South Florida +8
West Virginia made the most of its opportunity this year in the depleted Big East. They’ve undefeated in the conference with their only loss coming at the hands of a very good Virginia Tech team. And WV seems to get better every game although it’s tough to tell because the Big East is so bad. West Virginia doesn’t even think about passing and they still score every time they touch the ball. In fact nobody has stayed within 30 of the Mountaineers over the past 3-games. Meanwhile, South Florida is the surprise team of the Big East. They were right in the hunt for the conference crown until losing last week to UConn. But a look inside the numbers shows that USF has been average over the past few months. This doesn’t bode well for USF because the Mountaineers have been blowing away average teams with their sawed-off shotguns. West Virginia is playing too good to be stopped and should win this one by double digits. As a side note, I wonder how long it will take for the Superfans to make as much money as West Virginia did this year by getting a BCS bid. You’ve got to figure that BC will never be in a BCS bowl game while WV will dominate the Big East for years to come.
The Pick – West Virginia
FSU vs. VTech -14
This is another disgusting championship game. It’s not as bad as the Big 12 championship game, but it’s still pretty gross. What happened to FSU? They are coming into this game losers of 3-straight and the last two have been blowouts. I actually thought this line would be closer to 20. The only reason it’s 14 is because of the ghosts of Florida State past. The Seminoles have won six straight times against Virginia Tech with none of them being under 10-points margin of victory. Also, Virginia Tech still seems to have a mental block when playing teams from the great state of Florida. The Hokies destroy everybody else in the country except for Florida schools. But I’ve got to believe that this game will be different. I’m still not sure what happened when VTech played Miami, but I think that game was an aberration. Hopefully, the Hokies learned their lesson and won’t talk junk about the Seminoles before this game starts. FSU just wants to get this season over with. As long as the Hokies don’t rile them up, I don’t see any reason why this game doesn’t turn into a blowout.
Mortal Lock – Virginia Tech
LSU vs. Georgia +1.5
Now this is what a championship game should look like. Two great teams and I have absolutely no idea who is going to win. But it is too good of a game not to bet on. To be honest, I’m not sure why it’s not a pick 'em game. These teams are 100% evenly matched. This match up also proves what I’ve been saying from the beginning and that is that the SEC is the best conference in America. It is the only conference that is deep enough to ensure a great championship match up every single year. I guess I’m going to go with Georgia here. I think LSU is a better team in between the 20’s but I also think they are turnover prone. But nothing would shock me in this game.
The Pick - Georgia
