I Want This Cracker From The Titanic But Don't Have $18,000 To Spend On It

This cracker that survived the sinking of the Titanic will be on the block October 24 as part of an auction of rare Titanic, Hindenburg and related memorabilia. The cracker was recovered by James Fenwick, a passenger of the SS Carpathia that helped hundreds of Titanic survivors who had escaped the sinking ships on lifeboats. It’s estimated that this unusual souvenir will sell for as much as US$18,000. From the auction description:

This Spillers and Bakers Pilot biscuit formed part of the survival kit in a Titanic lifeboat and was kept as a souvenir by the Fenwicks. To the best of our knowledge its the only example to have survived. 3½ins. x 4ins.

It is sold in a photographic envelope with original notation from Mr Fenwick, “Pilot biscuit from Titanic lifeboat April 1912.”

$18,000 for this cracker…and I want it. You know how everyone has a “thing” they for some reason are into. Like most people have some random thing they know a lot about or enjoy watching documentaries about and learning about. Mine’s the Titanic. Don’t know why, just always have been fascinated by the entire thing. Used to do school projects about it, impossible not to watch the movie when it’s on ABC Family, and a couple times ago when I was in Vegas I went over to the Luxor to see the Titanic Exhibit. It’s fascinating stuff. Who hasn’t been drunk and/or high and had discussions about if you would have survived the sinking? Everyone has their own theories about what they would do, how they would live, how they would sneak onto a boat. For the record I I think I’d snake my way into living.

Unfortunately Sallie Mae and private health insurance has taken every last penny from my pocket, so I won’t be able to buy this cracker. It is my new life goal though. Make enough money to be able to buy a cracker from the Titanic. Fuck financial security, just get me this cracker so I can frame is and hang it on my wall.
